SweViver Pimax 8K/5K full review

More than two hours and forty minutes long.

This should really have been split into a playlist of at least 10 videos.
Certainly would have made it easier to navigate.

As for Elite, it seems he is mostly running out of the training scenarios, and these are far far from realistic of what the game actually throw at you.

Personally I wouldn't recommend trying any of these HMD's on anything less than a 1080 and i7 7/8 series CPU.
But then again I seem to be far more demanding than most.

Man, can't believe I watched the whole thing in one go :D
Amazing review.

But I'm really concerned about performance. How noticeable is a drop from stable 90 fps down to say 80-85.

Might have to wait this one out until GPUs catch up.

Looks like the 5k+ with limited FOV is the best bet for E: D.
Only real concern I have is black levels.

Reminds me why I sold my Vive, and why the 5K+ looks like the best option for E: D.

I watched this video last night (ff most of last hour). I think it is very good and thorough. From what I saw, the 5K+ looked better than the 8K in most of the samples, but he said the 8K actually looked better irl. But then he said text was easier to read in the 5K+, which pretty much cinches it for ED imo. I think either will be a great upgrade over the Rift and Vive. But I'll still wait for a 4K/eye OLED unit that reviews very well (or some other tech with dark darks). After watching, I ordered a 43" 4K monitor and am going to delve back into 2D gaming with TrackIR. I just can't take the blurriness anymore. Then I'll need to either get my eyes fixed or some prescription glasses.

As far as I understood the reviews of all these YouTubers non of em did try to optimize black levels and gamma using EDProfiler. So there is even more in there for us than what was shown.

I'm skeptical about the GPU requirements though. I'd really appreciate when FDev would make dual GPU setups work for us in VR.

am I wrong in assuming that the Pimax 5k resolution is not greater than that of Pimax 4k?
if that's the case then you don't need a beefier hardware for it. I already get a pretty crisp image in my 4k and 1070 handles that mostly fine...

The 5K+ renders at 2560x1440 per eye native. The 8K also renders at 1440 per eye, and then upscales it in the HMD to 3840x2160 per eye. It looks like with either one, they only render about 80% of that (kind of a rounded rectangle shape from the nose to the side on each panel), and the lenses display even less. So that takes a bit of the load off compared to rendering the full panels. You can also choose to render a couple smaller amounts for a tighter FOV. Something like that anyway.

@ about 1:29 in video (panel utilization)

I think you misread my post was about Pimax 4k vs 5k not 8k

It's a bit "apples and oranges". Yes, you have a point that 4K on 110 FOV "could equal" 5K on a 150 FOV for pixel density, but that's about it.

The 5K+ is an entirely different beast than the 4K. But as with all things VR, we all need MOAR PAWA!!!

Check my boost performance link above. :)

The fact that he is at least able to reach full frame rate is encouraging.

But I don't think it's that surprising Pimax had a lot of potential gain in the software side.
It is actually much more encouraging that they have managed to get such an improvement just after the beta NDA release and before starting to ship.

It has somewhat invigorated my confidence in Pimax.
