Switched to playing Elite on a monitor...

Decided to try out Elite on a monitor and not on the DK2. Able to set everything on high 1080p and ss x1.5 very good consistent fps solid at 60fp (vsynch on). Great fps even in Supercruise...so thats very interesting to me because something is going on with my low fps in supercruise in the dk2.

And yeah it looks great pin sharp lovely detail ....but...

a) dogfighting much more difficult because everything is far away from you and harder to see easily see everything on the screen. Dont mean the ship textures...i mean looking around and things feel closer in the d2. I almost died twice (hull 20%) fighting npcs which never happens to me in the dk2 heh

b) Feels crap because now you arent IN the game but playing it on a screen...its like a different game entirely.

c) nothing looks big on a monitor..

So looks like the dk2 ruined me :(

:D

Same feeling. I did some tests due to a bug I have (game always start minimized) and my first thought was: Waooo, it's beautiful. It stand 1 minutes before I thought: Waaooooo it's so flat in there ;)

I also tried ED on my "Hometheater Room " with the projector, the screen is 2m40 long x 1m35 high, and it was great ! superb! and so flat!

I played 30 minutes and I spent 30 minutes to bring back my desktop computer to my usual playing room plugging my DK2 and jump in the game. Inside the game. "I'm In", nothing better.

Lol... More difficult on a monitor?
I just got the rift a few weeks ago and I found combat a tad more difficult.
On a monitor you have a quick overview and everything in sight, with the rift you really need to look at things separately.
Ad to that the fact that the scale of things seem much larger then on a monitor, it took quite a bit of getting used to.

Just to be clear, now that I have gotten used to it, I'll never use a monitor again for ED. :D

I doubt anything untoward is going on - simply down to your graphics card having to do twice the amount of work when playing on the DK2.

Everything else than ED in VR is just 2D to me. Even fps (my most favorite games) miss the depth now and it feels like not beeing there. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter are fine. I'm collecting and restoring arcade machines also, 2D stays 2D but 3D is not the same without VR anymore.

To stay on topic: I can't play ED on a screen anymore because of the points you mentioned.

Went back to a monitor for rare trading (because it was so mind numbingly boring!)

Glad to say, got a few million in the back and will never go back to that monitor nonsense!

Nosh.

I had only played the tutorials on the monitor - the actual game i dived into dk2 straight away so maybe i was spoiled by the way combat is fought in the rift. For me just moving my head to the side feels more natural than pressing buttons for the various UI screens. Also when dogfighting on a monitor and you are doing sharp accellerated turns you cant see whether you are in the blue sweet spot for manoevring because its slightly obscured. In the rift you see everything :D

I would accept that if it was only 10 - 20 fps difference but its huge difference in fps (in open sometimes as low as 20fps and in solo it can go down to 50 fps <<in SC in other areas my fps is between 100 - 160). Also if my GPU was doing twice the work then usually the gpu usage and gpu temps would be higher...they're not, they're lower. Ive posted about it in other threads because its a mystery to me.

I read somewhere than you need between 3 and 4 more times to render in the DK2 than in a 2D monitor. This is due to stereo (x2) and also to the really bigger Field of View as you need to compute far more objects around the center for each eyes.

Also, oculus beta drivers, positional tracking, etc. probably add lot of computing...

a month ago I got a skin infection on my face so I had to retire the rift for a fortnight. (and cleaned my DK2 up with disinfectant)

even with a 70inch 3D monitor ED was just not the same. The only solution I could even contemplate using other than my DK2 for elite would be a triple screen set up with track IR

but even then, it aint VR!.

No matter how much arm waving, wide eyed loud talking and unintentional spitting on people I do, you just cannot adequately describe that feeling of presence and immersion that VR gives.
You have to see it to believe it.
It must be a bit of a headache for VR marketing.

I've also reverted back to flat panel again briefly. The game is stunningly gorgeous. But flat.

360°, 6dof, 110° FOV SDE fuzzy nastiness is far superior.

On the flip side tho. My worst VR experience BY FAR - I showed the Rift off to my mate. Who had just cycled round. He was very sweaty. Popping on ya Rift full of someone elses cold sweat is frankly disgusting.

I have not ED played on a monitor, but I do set up the second window when my brothers come around to play ED. It does mean I have to turn the graphics down to 1080p. But yeah it looks great but flat and I don't think I would be very good at all on a monitor. so much so I would not be wanting to try it. When there are times when the game is not running properly IE: when Oculus puts out a new runtime, I just don't play, I admit I leave it to the COMPUTER WIZARDS to let me know when things start to settle down again. So a big thanks to them.

I have to admit, it does look SO much better on a monitor. It's mainly the stars - they are tiny. On the rift they are big smeared out blurs. Ah well, can't have it all (yet)

Don't want to unduly burst bubbles but no, in 6 months we will get a minor upgrade to resolution. I welcome it but it's still going to be a blurry mess

Have you tried it? (not necessarily CV1 but possibly crescent bay?) I havent but everything I have read from people i respect who HAVE tried it have said the improved lenses, combined with the hugely reduced SDE, more full use of the screen real estate and topped off with that 20% increase in resolution say that it is massively improved over the DK2.

I guess I am just being positive :)

if that aint good enough for you then I guess you will have to wait.

My gut tells me CV2 will be out in xmas 2017.

Don't get me wrong, I always advocate the optimistic position. It's just in this case, numbers don't lie. Yes it's a massive improvement, and will be great for weaker graphical games, but for Elite, there's no way you can force stars to be smaller than pixels, and the pixels are going to be only a bit smaller themselves.

See for yourself:

The consumer version next year sits above the "1080" and blow the "CV1" in this simulator

Cool site.

Stars-shmars! Its the text and SDE that are my biggest gripes...... but my gripes are quiet, because I love my DK2.

I have three 27 inch monitors as eyefinity setup. Even with them it is no fun compares to the dk2. I also find combat easier with the dk2. I allwaS know where my enemy is. I do prefer ships with good visibility for that reason. I am flying the courier and clipper mostly and am loving it.

comes down to two things , do you want to play a game or do you want to be in the game , know which one i'd prefer
