Synthesis - Basic/Standard/ Premium

Hi guys,
I am a new ED player and I need some help (I did search in google!:) regarding synthesis "levels" - how can I improve from basic to standard and then to premium my receips?
Any missions? By using given action often enough? By engineers? Buying somewhere?
Please explain:)

Just check the synthesis screen for the recipes, and then hunt for those materials you need.
