How about giving us a slider to control how hot we want to let our ship get before it starts draining power from the systems distributor?
For light exploring, you can set it at 109% so it drains the system power instead of adding more heat. Great for those of us who want to keep our cockpit smoke free.
For the fighter, you can set it to 149% to keep yourself from getting cooked, but it drains faster the more heat.
Once the system power is drained and you still haven't managed to cool your situation, the heat continues to rise.
This would be the last option to stave off excess heat and the final visual que of seeing your system power drain.
