Newcomer / Intro System Discoveries & Exploration Tools

Last night i embarked on a 5000Ly trip to the Jellyfish Nebula to satisfy some of the engineer unlock requirements. The distance was perfect as i got the comms from the engineers 1 jump before my destination. En-route i would jump in to the system, honk it and then check the system map for any bodies the were good targets for the DSS.

with about 13 jumps form my destination, I jump into a system, honk it & it said there were 29 bodies discovered and a check of the map only revealed the star. all previous systems showed the bodies after a honk. I find all 29 bodies using the FSS (mostly icy worlds and gas giants) then continue the short trip to the station where i sold my trip eploration data.

so,

was i the first to discover these bodies?
is there anything i should look out for when handing in the scanning data? it was about 3am when i turned it and was very tired so may have missed something.
can i check anywere on any discoveries i make?
what are the best 3rd party tools for exploration that maybe save the above info for me?

thanks :)

Yes, you've got it. If bodies show in the system map before you have FSS'd them then they have been discovered already by someone. Any bodies that don't show have never been scanned before. The FSS does some passive scanning, hence why the star showed up, and any other bodies within I think 20 Ls will also be passively scanned.

Regards selling the data, you should get a message that you are first to discover bodies. You also get a credit bonus. Personally, I would simply note down any interesting systems that I first discovered and then check them in the galaxy / system maps after selling the data to see that I was credited with first discoveries (and scans). Interesting will of course be open to interpretation. :)

There are some third party exploration tools, but I never used them, so can't help there. Someone will doubtless come along and list them.

thanks for the reply

in hindsight i should have noted the system name. you live and learn. good to know i have a system with a really non descript name that has my name in it though :) will also pay more attention to whats going on when im selling data.

Haha, ive only found it on the map.

i just recalled when scanning the bodies using the FSS that i discovered a new body type. i looked it up in the codex and it took me to the system. and there it is, 28 bodies with my name on :)

its COL 89 SECTOR VU-Q B21-1

Exploring tools... you could try EDSM, Inara and the Road to Riches to start with...

However, you'll most ikely only find systems already discovered and tagged by other commanders. If you really want virgin systems, you'll need to travel a bit. Although there are a few nearish the bubble - try PRAEA EUQ or PRO EURL (you may run into me though :D ) - you could try a random route to Colonia.

EDIT - corrected my atrocious spelling.

As @Tyres O'Flaherty said if you find details of a system in a third party tool or database then somebody has visited it before, that doesn’t mean that they surveyed or mapped it all so there might be new stuff to do.

If you head to Betancourt Base | MUSCA DARK REGION PJ-P B6-1 and sell your new exploration data there after signing in to the CG you will have a chance of winning a new DSS if there are Ammonia Worlds in the data and get a higher payout for any data sold.

I agree with your good choice of using EDDiscovery, I've been using it since Beta. It's a very good tool. It's even great if I want to check routes for Buckyball races, because the route plotter on it is easy to use and better than any online ones I've tried.

Jellyfish nebula was my Palin destination and I got a lot of first discos on that route. Maybe you'll see my tag on some.

This was years ago, but even so I still recall that Lt Frank Drebin of all commanders had beaten me to some of them.

And that hurt. Maybe not as much as jumping on a bicycle without a seat, but it hurt :D

EDDiscovery is indeed excellent, but for me - best everyday app is Elite Observatory. Chocolate and vanilla.

Thanks all for the replies and suggestions. Im finding ED discovery very helpful if a bit overwhelming. I would rather that than be underwhelmed. Have linked it up to EDSM and Inara with APIs. It has so many options. I love how you can see the traffic routes on the 3d map

After mooching about in the Jellyfish nebula for a bit, i thought heading back to the bubble would be boring if i went back the way i came, so ive decided to head home via the seagull nebula and the interestingly named Hell Port asteroid base.

I got excited finding my first planets on the way to Jellyfish but this trip is almost new star and planet discoveries every other jump. Found and DSSed a few Amonia worlds and Water worlds but no earth likes yet.
