System map

Has anybody figured out what the background stars/constellations are that are shown in the system map? Where is the viewpoint situated? I’ve only just realised they are the same static image & don’t change with the system you’re in. Just curious!!

Nor did I until the last few days.
Common sense means it would be the brightest stars from the cockpit view, but it ain’t!!
Now curiosity is making me wonder what the stars are & where is the viewpoint from.
Probably insignificant in the great scheme of things (Sandro: what shall we put in the system map background? DB: any old rubbish, nobody will look at it for at least 5 years! 😁).
but I’m getting a bit OCD in my old age and this is now disturbing my peace of mind!

I think it merely takes one or two layers that's otherwise used for the Galaxy Backdrop and tossed into the System Map as a generic 2D FX.

Nothing to it.

Just compared a bunch of ELW System Map screenshots from vastly different areas in the Galaxy and checked them for that background.
Result : the background of the System Map seems the same everywhere... making it generic FX.

For good measure, compared SOL with Colonia. Again, identical background stars in the System Map.

None I believe, just a generic pattern.
(just looking at the red pixels, that's not how the Galaxy Backdrop renders any stars for example)

Even if was representing anything, it'd be unpossible to make out anything from this due to the 2D display.

Good old rule of thumb with ELITE : don't overthink details you see.
In the past, 100% of this has been nothing. The remaining 2.8% has been identified as bugs ;)
