System Scanners?

Hi everyone,

Just getting back into the game. Do you still need system scanners? The ones that scan the entire system from the Star when you frameshift in? I see blue text now “discovered...”. If we do need scanners still, what is it called that scans the entire system when you first get ther? All planets, points, stations, etc?

How do you activate the scanner if it is built in now?

Thanks for the help.

The old "discovery scanners" have been replaced by a thing called an "FSS" - an acronym which is one transposed letter away from accurately describing many people's opinion of the change.

Basically, you have to go into a different "mode" (which looks like something from a dodgy 1990s RTS) and hunt around a map of the system, zooming in and out to find and scan each object in the system individually.

Fortunately, if you're in a populated system you can just scan the nav-buoy instead.

Probably for the best if you search youtube for something like "Elite FSS operation" and then watch some videos on the subject.

The "honk" is still there, but it works differently as it's now part of the FSS which is built in to every ship. To use it you have to bind it to a firegroup and be in "Scan" mode (blue) as opposed to "Combat" mode (orange).

If you're in a system which has been fully discovered (either by yourself, or someone else, or is a pre-discovered system such as many in the Bubble), then after the "honk" the NavPanel and the System Map are fully populated. You can then use the FSS interface to resolve any Signal Sources if you wish or you can fly around the system as in the past and target them to scan them..

If you're in an undiscovered system then after the "honk" only stars are discovered. You then need to either use the FSS to scan the system, or drop in to the NavBeacon (if there is one) and scan that in order to populate the NavPanel and System Map. For full details on how to use the FSS it's probably best to watch a YouTube tutorial; it's not so easy to describe in words.
Flying near planets automatically scans them as well (no need to target) - this might be why you've had some "Discovered" popups if there were planets within scan range when you dropped out of hyperspace.

There are haters and lovers of the change; make up your own mind.

EDIT: PS, there's a new optional "DSS" module now which allows you to Surface Map planets by firing probes at it. This yields a new "First Mapped By" tag if you're the first to do so as well as more credits. It also reveals the locations of any permanent surface POIs, such as volcanic activity, biological sites, or human/alien settlements.
The functionality of the original "Surface Scanner" is now part of the built-in FSS; the DSS is completely new functionality.

You clearly never had a big box of legos as a kid.

I totally did - maybe that's why I like playing in the big galactic sandbox and exploring by flying my ship around, rather than playing blob-hunting minigames. I'd put the FSS in the same bucket as playing snap, rather than lego. Just an opinion.

OP, I hope you got the answers you actually needed :)

Pretty sure my original reply covered it.

A full explanation of how the new FSS works is a bit outside the scope of a forum thread, so watching a couple of YT video's is almost certainly the best way to learn about it.

The major thing about the change is that everyone is entirely understanding of other people's opinions on the subject, and all the thoroughly polite debates about it were done within the first day or two after its introduction, with absolutely nobody continuing to rehash the same arguments over and over again for months.

System Scanners no longer exist.
To get a full system view of an unexplored system, use the FSS to perform individual Body Scans of every body in the system (or use the FSS to scan the main planets, and then fly to them to obtain proximity based auto-scans of their moons).

Opinions vary as to whether this is a good thing.
