I entered an unknown system and positioned myself near the sun. So far, I am unable to target it. I have tried at various distances. Can someone please help?

System Scanning - Help Please

You need to activate your discovery scanner, it will give you unknown contacts that you can then scan.
Edit: to activate, you need to assign it to a firing group and hold the trigger until it says "complete"
Thanks for the reply. Can you please tell me how to activate it?
Is the star marked as "Unknown" in the system bodies list in the left hand UI? If not, then you won't be able to scan it as you already have the information.

If the star is "Unknown" are you unable to target if you point your ship's nose directly at the centre of the star and press the target button? You need to be facing directly at the star to trigger and then complete a scan. You can also target using the system bodies list (scroll to it and select using <Space> if you have the default kb assignments) and then again point your ship directly at the centre of the star.

Edit: ninja'd in part. In the right hand UI tab to the weapons page and assign the discovery scanner to secondary fire (the number 2 should appear against it). You can then trigger the scanner using whichever button you have assigned to secondary fire. As Mnemon says, hold it down till you hear the foghorn sound.

You need to assign it to firing group like you do with the weapons(hit 4, switch to the correct tab etc.) then select the group and fire(press it continuously until it's complete).
