System Security - Can it change?

Okay I might have missed the memo on this but can the System Security Level change and if yes, is it a common thing?

The system I am currently calling my temporary home is now showing as Medium Security but I am positive that only a couple of days ago it was High Security (I wouldn't have settled here if it wasn't HighSec, it is one of my requirements for a home station).

Yes, it can certainly change depending (I think) upon which minor faction is in control. Certainly the system that I use as a home system went through a period of changing between medium and high security, and I notice other systems also change from time to time.

I don't think it's hugely commonplace though, so for instance the low security systems that I use for IF haven't changed ever in my experience.

Thanks, kind of relieved that I wasn't imagining things! It is strange though, there has been no change to which minor faction is in control and the system has no wars, no conflicts - current status is Civil Liberty. Anyway I shall continue, just have to be a little more vigilant when returning with mission cargo :D

Then I suspect my 'guess' that it was tied to which minor faction is in control may not be right... That was certainly what I noticed triggered it, but hey BGS magic... ;)

You may very well be right, I will be the first to put my hand up and admit I know all about how the BGS works (even built that ethos into my Commander's story :D).

Anyway, thanks for the response, muchly appreciated.

It may well be the Civil Liberty state that's reduced the security level. Civil Liberty implies that the people are generally contented and peaceful. Crime has dropped to very low levels meaning that much less law enforcement is required. This may lead to Pirate Attack later once the less contented, and therefore more criminally minded, neighbours realise there's easy pickings to be had.

That is an excellent solution, thank you Commander. And you are probably right, it does make sense that the system fails into a false sense of security, the authorities become lax, the population laxidasial. Then opportunist pirates notice the rich pickings and move in, changing the state yet again. Hmm could be fun times are ahead in my little part of the galaxy.

Thanks again

Various system states can change the security level, and if it's close to a boundary that can change the displayed security level with the associated effects.
Investment, Civil Unrest, War: -security
Lockdown: +security
I don't think the others have significant effects.
