Systems Disruptor - or "ion cannon" to you and me...

We've all seen how our internal displays can get all distorted, along with our ship's computer voice, while under attack. My suggestion is simple, and would easily find a home with a trader who wants to discourage bandits, or indeed with a pirate who wants to take his prey's cargo at his leisure - in fact, I believe anyone could make good use of this.

An "ion cannon", to borrow the Star Wars vernacular; an energy weapon that, while it causes little to no physical damage, wreaks havoc with the target's power systems. Increased capacitor drain, reduced weapons capacity, the ability to slow or halt an FSD charge... Commanders would need to divert power to Systems to offest the effects, perhaps? Obviously this would need to be balanced on the flip side, such as requiring a medium hardpoint, a full SYS capacitor, no gimbals...

I believe this could add an interesting element to combat, especially PvP.
 
An interesting balance would be to make this a defensive weapon and make it more "AOE" based (i.e. an EMP) which would also take out your own systems as well. With slightly faster recovery for the initiator, this would make a great way to escape battles, without making it an overpowered offensive weapon.
 
So like an EMP mine? That basically scrambles all systems for a few seconds and makes the HUD go haywire?

Sounds good to me.
 
Great idea!

From other games I know that this would be awesome. Nothing frustrates me more than losing control of my character while fighting. It would make for some great moments. Screaming at my power display, while desperately blowing chaff trying to keep alive until systems are back online.
 
I'd love to see both variations to be honest - an AOE weapon that has just as much chance of disabling you if you're not careful, and a much less powerful beam weapon that would be ideal for "stalling" subsystems. Great news that an EMP mine is in the works though!
 
So I just experienced an 'EMP mine' type effect testing Beta 1.1, because my CH Products HOTAS pitch, roll and lateral thrust axes cut out when head look (via EDTracker) is activated. Go into combat, try to use lateral thrust, accidentally press the ministick which enables headlook, and suddently get a 'dead stick' effect where my shields are up but I have no control until I disable headlook again.

This was amazingly good fun and I would like to see the EMP mine in the game ASAP.

Really good idea. If some one has played the X games (no, the embarrassed called x rebirth doesn't deserve an X ) there is a ion disruptor witch cooks up the modules and quite often cause a chain reaction, and there is also ion shard "something" witch nerfed enemy weapon effectiveness (might reduced ships speed,manuv.etc, not too sure tough.. has been long time. Bloody paranids, you'll get yours in someday! Something along the OP's suggestion fits ED well and add to the game.
 
great idea, so long as it disables your own weapons as well.

to enable an easier escape, fine.
to make every attacker a sitting duck and thereby make trading risk free, not so fine.
