This is the very first thing which truly brought back the old '84 Elite feeling: docking with a stock T-9.
It's huge, it's slow like a turtle - love it!
I swapped my Python over to this shed yesterday and to make it more interesting I left just enough money to fill the stock cargo space up to about 70%.
So I started trucking...
I mean I wanted to start but apparently I had to drop my trade route by the simple fact of the T-9's inability to jump. There was no available route between the two stations 27ly from each other.
Well, this has reset my priorities - I had to get enough money for an FSD upgrade.
I've never thought I would haul food again but here we go: the cargo spaces are stinking from meat and coffee but that's what I could afford. And actually I needed a planet where this turtle could jump.
I raised the bet.
Well, I don't need shields, I could buy a few more tonnes of manure for the price of the E6 class shield. I did.
Ok, let's see how it flies. I flew the T-7 a lot, I thought this might be nearly the same with slightly less jaw. "Ship released!" "Landing gear retracted!"
And then I realized this was something really special. I barely could keep up turning with the station's rotation speed. Well, I have to make it through the letterbox now, there's no way back. It wasn't a problem to whizz through the slit in a Cobra when a T-9 was crossing so I have plenty of room.
But it's utterly slow. And why those lights on both sides of the dashboard are flashing?!
"Hull integrity has breached!" Ah, yes, I have no shields. But what?!... I see, there's a few pieces of that wreck floating around which was punished by the station lasers for whatever reason and one of then clanged on my turtle. Ok, 92% is still alright, however at least I have to make it out! No, I won't look right to that panel, I'm aware of my credit balance which will be just enough for fuel for the return trip but I have to make it before 1.3 strikes in with the higher prices. I may have been greedy to sell my shields for jam jars but hey, this is now adventure!
I made it out no problem. I checked my throttle lever on my HOTAS because I suspected a failure. It was alright. The ship was very slow.
And then I swapped dimension. This huge whale is just an unbelievable beast. It teaches me how to slow down and just fly. The willingness to carry on, the desire to hurry, the old reflexes in my fingers to operate the systems are outdated, useless junks I need to throw away. This ship flies in it's grandiose way and makes me feel the space much bigger.
10 ly in two jumps. Fine, I see now, this ship travels.
Exiting supercruise is great fun, especially when you're almost teleported into the solar cell structure of the Ocellus. And then I just got the feeling. The old Elite-experience started growing in my long lost compartments of my mind. The T-9 required me to be that very careful commander I had to be in 1990. Reaching the entrance from the supercruise disengage point was very long. But it felt good because I understood: we are traveling!
Then fine tuned manouvres, landing gear, all like a retired sack of grain: little noise and no interesting flips. And what's more important: I have to be careful! I never had to be careful in ED so far but with this it's a must.
No shields, no money for insurance but a thick hull and at last something on stakes.
Anyway I like the Sidey too...
