Tactical Sphere

Confirmed in the press release for Odyssey:
" ...tactical sphere of group combat... "

I have interpreted tactical sphere as a form of battle royale mode.

The Thargoids/guardians may have a weapon that creates an energy cone that slowly shrink towards a central area destroying everything in its path. Players would have to coordinate together to ensure they advance within a set timeframe or be destroyed. This cone of destuction would also bring you into close and personal contact with the thargoids or Guardians. Perhaps they would culturally regard it as more honourable to fight up close and personal. It could also be seen as giving a tactical advantage due to their biological makeup. The guardians in particular were hunters and they may enjoy the thought of luring prey into traps.

Well, there's always THIS sphere:

...or they just liked watching pilots getting their faced chewed off. ;)

You're probably right about this.

I donno. sounds like "battlefield" style combat to me. Perhaps the zone boundaries are sphere shaped.

The Sphere of Combat

Experience intense first-person combat, kit out your character with an array of weapons and gear, and coordinate with teammates to master a multi-layered, deep, tactical environment where Commanders, SRVs and Starships converge.

The last part of that final paragraph is basically ELITE: Galactic Assault (SWBFII)

It sounds incredible...
