So far you really only just hire an NPC crew member to use your fighter and that's it. they serve no other purpose really.
I wanted to expand on this a little, I will break my idea into parts to save braincells.
-apprentices-
What if you could take on the role as a mentor to those who need it? would you take on someone knowing they will have to move on?
-Apart from NPC crew who you generally hire you may choose to take on an apprentice to train to their required level (some may ask for expert, others more higher ranks) instead of them becoming a crew member that you simply fly with, your goal is to train them to a required rank below your own.
-once you have trained them to the required level, they leave your crew rather than staying. to repay your training they will send you packages each week with materials , commodities and of course small sums of credits.meaning the more apprentices trained, the more cumulated goods you will receive. Apprentices with higher ranks will have better weekly drops.
these goods are given to you by their travels that they may not of been able to do unless for your efforts. creating a nice feel good satisfaction that you are helping the people of the galaxy
-As a result of training, they ask for much smaller percentages of profit share, but at the expense of not being able to keep them after required rank is met.
-Adding alternate ranks to crew such as trade and exploration ranks would increase the variety of tasks needed to level apprentices (eg, "I have the dream of becoming a trader, but I need the rank of Tycoon, can you teach me how to turn a profit?") in this case, trade missions or simply trading increases rate of progress. whilst exploration and combat may not.
That's my idea so far, hope you enjoy it!
