General / Off-Topic Taking the Game Way Too Seriously

It has come to my attention that a few commanders out there have gotten angry enough to post other players real life names in forums and openly threaten them with real life violence. This is absolutely ridiculous and uncalled for. I have been asked to raise awareness of this issue, and I think it one that certainly deserves the attention.

I will link here the publication with an article on pg. 4 called "The Crossing of the Rubicon", written by DrunkRenegade12

In many places, these actions are against the law. I do not know what Frontier's policy is, and I would think that somewhere, there is a policy in place to deal with this sort of thing. I also think that Frontier's ability to deal with this issue when it occurs on 3rd party forums and websites is quite limited. These actions are absurd, and these threats should not be taken lightly by the players, Frontier, and the community as a whole.

People are idiots. On the internet people are bigger idiots.

It happens and sadly we can't prevent it. The best thing to do is just ignore them and hope they get that message that NO ONE CARES BUT YOU!

Call me uneducated but I thought the point of crossing the Rubicon was that there was no going back?

If you see something you think is not on, report it. Bear in mind that while this is a public (and child friendly) forum, banter between people that know each other may, to an outsider appear excessive.

I ignore the testosterone fuelled hyperbole & just try to understand their reasoning. Some are simply not as good at putting their point across as others. I often struggle to make my own arguments & opinions clear, it's easy to misinterpret posts on the first read.

ETA: just found the threat bit in the linked paper. I don't approve (obviously) but what's that got to to with this forum? It seems to be about some Cmdrs arguing in a completely different bit of the internet. Report it to the admins of that. It is not the norm.

Could easily fall under the forum rule about harassment and what not.

Legal ramifications are tricky at best, given the fact that this is the internet.

In many country life threaten is a very serious law infraction.
If I was the victim, and I was positive the offender lives in my country, I'd go to the police. That is a severe crime, and upon report police is forced to question the offender even if the victim doesn't want to do any legal action.

Such real life out of character violence directed to a real person, and stating they realistically know your address, is something way bigger than what a game developer can do.

9 out of 10 it's a stupid kid, but if it's a real lunatic making him banned can be dangerous for the victims involved in REAL LIFE.

"Together, these factions make up the bulk of criminal activity on the Xbox platform; from attacking innocent new players in the LHS 3447/Eravate area, to attacking traders at Community Goals."

Don't forget that it's all just RP and you can't infer anything about people from their behaviour towards others in a videogame ;)

But seriously, once it turns into real world threats and harassment the appropriate recourse is to contact the police. I hope the criminal elements of this will be met with swift justice.

And here I was hoping this thread was actually about the game.

This thread isn't about taking the game too seriously, it's about needing mental help.

Please move to off topic.

I've always believed that if no-one could hide themselves behind a wall of anonymity the internet would be a better place. People will say anything if they think there won't be any real life repercussions.

The only appropriate response to any thread of violence which might conceivably be taken seriously is to report the matter to the police. And that is all that should be done.
