Taking time a choose a power.

I really pictured being so excited about the update that I would select a power within the first couple of hours of release. Now that the time is actually here, I think I want to get my bearings a bit as an "indie" pilot, able to freely move about space and get a true feel for the differences. Not sure what to expect from the community, as far as how many will join a power right from the get go, for varying reasons. Some people knew who they would be joining before the powers were announced.

Anyway, I think there might be a nice dynamic with indie pilots that can move between controlled sectors. If they are somewhat rare, they could become quite the commodity for powers, however, acknowledging this fact also means they could be quite dangerous to powers, they actually won't trust you, "Maybe duvall sent him." I'll probably end up choosing a power, but I want to get a hold on the bigger picture first.

Food for Thought

Well it seems there were many players wanting to pick the faction of the black guy. I think you will find many players will stay "independant" and not side with a Power. You can leave a Power whenever you like should you make a choose you want to change, so no real problem with picking one early.

You do get many bonuses for just being in their systems, you don't need to sign up to use them.

Planning to do the same. Given I'll first join the three with the special modules I want and only join the ones I actually like after that, it's probably worth waiting to see which of the former three does worst to get them for less effort. Also, relocating ships before pledging may be a wise move.
.
On the other hand, judging from previous experience and having the weekend off, it's very well possible that I decide to log on after having consumed copious amounts of alcoholic beverages, resulting in me logging on the next day and wondering if I was shanghaied...

not sure what you mean by less effort. Should be just as hard working for any of them, unless there are a serious number of players working against your Power and you keep dying to them.

Personally I'll be exploring the new smuggling opportunities first rather than PP. I'm happy to wait abit for the PP dust to settle before choosing.

My plan is to wait a few day's before pledge my allegiance to any one power, see the pro's and con's of each faction. Am more interested in trying the new toy's like the ships and the drones for collecting atm.

Unless they made last minute changes, I need to be in the top 50% of contributors over a period of four weeks, so joining a faction with lots but rather casual supporters should make that part easier - assuming the merit unlock requirements for a rank are dynamic as well and adjusted on a weekly basis, that's also likely to play a role.

Didn't have the time to test the system in depth during beta, so those are just assumptions - just another reason to wait.

I think that was changed in the course of beta, Catpain. The PP tiers are now fixed numbers of merits.

This was changed to an absolute value ranking system fyi, so no more competition element.

They made last minute changes :)
You need 1000 merit points to get to rating 3, the loot rating.
There may be a 50% merit decay week to week.

even better smuggling with Archon Delaine territory.
Was getting about 26000T profit, but I think they put a stop to that.

So just fixed 1000 merits of which I have to grind 50 back every week without the top 50% requirement at all then?

Sounds good - given I've just opened a bottle of wine to pass the waiting, I may find myself shanghaied tomorrow (probably with most of my ships in hostile stations).

50% loss per week not 50.
That was the word during beta, will have to see what it is live, seems high.

Typo - I meant 500 - wondering if I'll have to be at 1000 in four subsequent weeks or only in the fourth week (or has the four week rerquirement been dropped as well?), but we'll see I guess...

4 weeks was still there.
It seemed like you could join, do nothing with them for 4 weeks, then get to 1000 and then buy your part.

I believe they said they'd tweak it downwards.

I wonder by how much

I made my decision in beta - Arissa's got my support. Unfortunately, I've got no interest in the Imperial Hammer (pretty useless on a dual-pulse Vulture), so I've flipped slightly - I'm going to be pledging to Aisling until I can get the prismatic shield generator, then I'll defect.

I think I'm probably one of the only ones who's not supporting Aisling because of her picture. Mainly because she's about the same age as my daughter...

I am pro Empire and Alliance, but I am not interested in working for any power right now. I´ll be watching things while doing what I used to do.
I think I have to work out how to profit from the changes in controlled systems, especially between NEIGHBORING ones under influence of different powers.

First real concern (when back from vacation) is making my T9 safer against the better AI...

This.

I've been waiting for smuggling to make sense for soooo long. Now I see a good chance of this happening ;)
Now just the part where we have a chance to bribe the sec officer..... :)

Well, that's understandable then. I was really inclined to pledge to Aisling though because of the reasons you mentioned. Not the shield. :D

50% per week, that's exorbitant. If what DB said is true and it is only intended to get you out of a hostility trap then why have positive rep degrade at all?

Nope, 2 separate things.
You still have REPUTATION with the minor factions.
The 50%, or whatever it will actually be, is for your Power RATING. Thats something you get if you join a Power in 1.3.
