Tales of Intimidator Exploder - A different kind of Sag A* trip

I've been playing the game since the first time it was discounted in Steam exactly half a year ago. The game has been quite addictive thus far - during that time I've logged 20 minutes shy of 500 hours of playtime as per game information screen. My playstyle can be described as multirole involving varying degrees of combat, smuggling, trading, long-range gigs, CG's and exploration. Somebody else could've accumulated more assets with that amount of game time but IMO 747M is nothing to sneeze at. So far I've found exploration to be the most meditative content in the whole game, just great for winding off and seeing different places without taking too much stress on what's going on. It's always very enjoyable to discover ELW's and to check out for any stuff that lies in a signal source, salvageable wreckage, you name it. Last night I was able to hit Pioneer rank on exploration with 58M credits worth of sold exploration data. However, so far I haven't been very far off the bubble: my farthest trip hasn't taken further but slightly below 4 kylies from the bubble.

Currently the game doesn't have that much content that I haven't experienced. For this reason I thought about doing a longer exploration trip. I don't want to be one year away from any activities that might come around during the time so I don't have interest in heading towards the far rim. The Distant Worlds expedition sounds like a great and unforgettable trip for all people involved but I don't think that I have the amount of time and devotion needed for that undertaking. Besides, it would boil down on flying around with Asp or Anaconda, accompanied by... hundreds of Asps and Anacondas. That would kinda lack originality. Lately I've had quite much of action going on with my multirole Asp, the "King Crimson" (a ship named after its versatility and color) and slaying pirates with my Anaconda, the "Lohjalainen" (a ship named after the sounds it frequently reproduces when passing the docking port). I've been thinking about something else.

I've decided to travel to the core. Because Sag A*. No other reasons needed. Okay, so what's the big deal here with the visitor list firmly showing four-digit numbers and the place being so popular that you could make a living out of putting up a souvenir stand there? I thought about standing out from the crowd with ship selection. There has been _one particular ship_ that has lately been a subject of lamentation for its different shortfalls but, first and foremost, for its poor FSD range, a feature that would especially hamstring its usability for exploration. So what is the ship of my choice?

Vette.

There are probably other poor souls who have thought about the same thing but I haven't came across too many of them in these forums (or in any other media) by myself so far. All I've heard is one player contemplating about it in https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=199948 thread. I got the prerequisite Federal rank around one week ago and today I actually bought the ship. Right now the ship is fitted and ready for the journey. The biggest question is obviously about the jump range. You want figures, you get them: 18.57 LY with full tanks and zero cargo. Subtract some decimals for any tons of Lavian Brandy and salvage inside the hold. 19.49 LY zero fuel/cargo range. As you can see, this ship isn't exactly the Beagle Point kind of stuff. How does it handle? I tried a landing on 0.4G world (Mercury, Sol) and it didn't have any problems but anything considerably higher might yield nasty surprises. On normal flight it feels ok to fly, albeit a bit suspectible for sliding. In supercruise the ship is only marginally more irresponsive than Asp and it feels like an acrobat when compared against Anaconda.

Do I have more sensible/better alternatives in my hangar? Well, yes. I have two Asps: one of them is kitted for exploration and has 34 LY range and King Crimson has 29 LY range. I also have an A-specced combat Anaconda that could be kitted for zillion LY range with some work if I had interest. Any of those options however would be unoriginal for a Sag A* trip when compared against doing the same in Vette.

This is my current loadout for Vette that gets called by the rather questionable and theme-fitting name "Intimidator Exploder". That ship really is the most Arnold Schwarzenegger, Hummer H1, USS Enterprise and that kind of stuff themed ship for any exploration trip that mankind has sent into the black so far. Its entire appearance is farting The Star-Spangled Banner with pride as it cruises around The Great Unknown coated in jet black paint darker than a black hole as it tries to figure out the right way way into the galactic core. While not armed to the teeth in your typical A-kitted CZ/RES ship way, it has enough teeth to whack the living daylights out of any unsuspecting Cobra or Eagle pilot who thinks bullying innocent spacefarers is more fun than outrunning them when they get mad.

2x Heat Sink Launcher
Standard bulkheads
A5 PP
D7 Thrusters
A6 FSD
D5 Life Support
A5 PD
D8 Sensors
32t + extra 32t Fuel Tank (Makes me feel more comfortable by feeling more like Asp and gives additional safety when navigating through badlands, drops fully laden range by around 0.4 LY's)
B7 Fuel Scoop (A7 would drive the cost up by 70M cr for very small gain and I don't have that money to spare.)
B5 AFMU x2
D5 Shield Generator
G4 Vehicle Hangar with 2 SRV's
ADS+DSS
256t of cargo space (For playing the route mapper game and storing any goodies that come across)

The stuff is bought from Li-Yong Rui controlled systems and total price for the setup is between 200M and 210M. That translates into insurance cost slightly north of 10M. I believe that the price-in-credits-for-one-LY-of-range with this ship is absolutely the worst in the game. I actually calculated a similar setup for a 24 LY Cutter in ED Shipyard and it had price including Li-Yong Rui discounts between 240M and 250M. I'm not exactly sure if you can get discounted Cutter anywhere but at least I was able to find the discounted Vette from my base-of-operations shipyard in Shenich.

Of course there is the option to shave off some additional weight by dropping more weaponry, shields, vehicle hangar or shrinking PP even further. However, any additional modifications combined that would result in gains for jump range would be at most around ONE (1) LY with major compromises on survivability. I sincerely hope that this ship _SHOULD_ be able to handle anything that gets thrown into its direction like contact binaries, since there will be a LOT more jumping involved than with your normal 30+ LY Asp.

Wish me luck. I'm leaving tomorrow. I'm not exactly sure how the trip will turn out but there is only one way to find out. The only intermediate stop that I've planned so far is Great Annihilator. If you have something to tell about the build or see some shortfalls, please let me know. Any recommendations for most comfortable route/navigation stuff and nice sights along the way are also welcome. :)

Day 1 of the trip has come to its conclusion.

Our hero, the Intimidator Exploder left from Daedalus, Sol today at 8:36 game time and made a detour to Lave Station to catch some Lavian Brandy into the hold. The ship has felt nice and responsive during supercruise. Heat problems have been absolutely nonexistent, thanks to sufficiently-sized A-rated PP and disabling all unnecessary modules. The biggest problem, as predicted, is with the hyperjumps. My current 100% fuel range is 18.49 LY with 4T of refreshments and a small survey data cache onboard. This translates into quite zigzaggy ride with route plottings. Jumps vary between 13 LY and max range in lenght. However, there have been odd cases of sub-10 LY jumps as well. I wasn't expecting this to be a short ride but I certainly wouldn't have been sorry if the Vette had received like 2-3 LY's of additional range from developers. The ship smells like a total catastrophe for navigating around in bubble if it is fitted for combat with decent gear.

I didn't come across anything particularly interesting. Not a single ELW was encountered and 3 or 4 WW's got scanned. I hope I'll come across something more rare later.

Distance to Sol: 2307,2 Sag A* 23672,8 and it took total of 175 jumps.

The ship is such an intimidating sight that it even eclipses an orange giant star!

The game already gave a warning of an impending "Surprise! You're dead!" episode when I came out from hyperspace right next to F and A class stars and the fuel scoop fired up for a split second. However, I landed in a place that didn't require any additional maneuvers. This screenshot is exactly from the spot where I landed.

Several days has passed and after 608 jumps counting from Sol, the Intimidator Exploder has reached the first major waypoint during its voyages, the NGC 6357 nebula located roughly 1/3 way from the human inhabited space towards the galactic core. The route I took wasn't that direct (around 300 LY below and 400 LY east to the direct route to Sag A*). Currently I feel that the extra fuel tank that has been installed serves no purpose apart from additional ease-of-mind: I have yet to come across a stretch with 2 consecutive unscoopables. Haven't still come across any ELW's, just a few WW's here and there. I'm not exactly complaining the views in the NGC 6357 nebula, the dust makes for interesting scenery and the colors bring into my memory the stage sets of late 80's Pink Floyd shows. Especially some of the black holes in the nebula give some hint of what will be coming. Still expecting more magnificent views down the path...

Currently, the distance to Sol is 8239,9 LY and to Sag A* 17746,2 LY.

Somewhere in the NGC 6357 nebula there was a lone water world that bathed with light. For a brief moment, there was an object of oppressive darkness in the skies of the planet.

With the friendly assistance of the weekend, the Intimidator Exploder's journey towards the core has seen considerable headway since the last update. And the trip has been considerably more eventful than before reaching the NGC 6357 nebula. Currently the ship lies just a bit over 10 kylies from the Sag A* and subsequently slightly below 16 kylies from Sol.

After leaving the NGC 6357 nebula I came across several streaks of unscoopable brown dwarves. I actually had to detour twice towards a scoopable star with autoplotted route plan in order to stock up with fuel. Nothing hazardous though, my ship in its configuration has fuel for 8-9 jumps when tanked up. During those streaks a little mishap struck. I had the orbit rings disabled and experienced an emergency drop while unsuccessfully evading a brown dwarf. Not only that, I was also a stranger for using those AFMUs. When I tried to repair my modules, I was wondering that nothing happens. Well, those AFMUs were disabled. Subsequently I enabled them and started to repair my FSD while being in supercruise getting outwards from the brown dwarf. Guess what happens when you start repairing FSD while in supercruise?

You drop out. It took me two tries to figure out while flying under a heavy influence of rum-cola mixture. With a result of more damage to repaired with AFMUs. However, in the end it wasn't too dramatic. I learned the hard way how to operate the AFMUs. My hull stood at 97%, PP at 95% and all of my repairable modules were repaired up. I used about 1/10th of my total AFMU capacity in the aftermath of the slackery.

So what next? After the nebula I pushed on and crossed the Norma Expanse. Suddenly, things were completely different: stars were so frequent that my average jump range went into 17.x LY's with no more odd sub-10 LY jumps, undiscovered neutron stars were encountered and explored and finally the dry season of ELW's stopped: During a span of 3.5 kylies I actually found five previously unexplored ELW's. The best of them was in a system that had a neutron star as the main star of the system (the ELW was orbiting a red dwarf though) in addition to 2 TFC WW's. The star density has also increased in such a way that the I've also had to learn the use of jump calculator to smoothen off the route calculation time.

At this pace it won't take that many days anymore to reach the Sag A*. The destination seems to be within reach for the notoriously jump-range hamstrung Intimidator Exploder. Next stop? Not sure where. If nothing else comes across, it will be at Great Annihilator.

Current jump count? 1042.

I have an announcement.

Two_largest_dark_objects.jpg

The two largest dark objects in the galaxy finally meet each other. The Intimidator Exploder has reached Sag A*.

And after 1648 jumps I'm on the borderline of getting insane. When I'll get back I sincerely hope that I will NEVER EVER explore with such a slow ship again.

So basically what has happened since the last update? I decided to pick up the pace during the weekend and by Sunday evening, I eventually got 4,8 kylies away from Sag A*. In Monday I went straight towards Great Annihilator in order to pay a visit. Only one word to describe that place: WARPY! You just can't find that amount of distortion when visiting the black holes near the bubble. Such a sight. After that I decided to go directly towards Sag A* and eventually, at Wednesday 20th Jan 3302 18:56, ten and half days after departing from Sol I had reached my destination. During the trip I discovered eleven Earth-like worlds and two ammonia worlds. I scanned probably around two dozen water worlds that were close enough to the system entry point but to hasten the trip I decided to skip most of the ones I honked.

I'll probably head back to bubble soon but I won't be keeping such hurry this time. At this moment I don't have any specific reason to be back there so I could as well check some sights close to the galactic core. I believe I'll go farm some neutrons, visit several interesting nebulae or any other point of interests on my way back. If you have good ideas, please let me know.

Boeft FW-V E2-4211 4 A landing.jpg
The only SRV landing on a trip was at Boeft FW-V E2-4211 4 A, a rocky low-G world orbiting a blue T Tauri that was subsequently orbiting a bluish class B star (IIRC). I ran around for a while to gather some materials but decided to land nowhere else in order to not compromise my ship before reaching the goal.

Skybox_transition.jpg
I'm not sure whether it's the skybox or the procedural generation of stars cutting the density of more luminous stars instantly but this is what I saw slightly below 10 kylies from Sag A*. I wouldn't call that "even distribution".

Sunfire.jpg
While I was scooping a smaller star I noticed that the flares were quite high...

Mad_hole.jpg
While being 1.3 Mm away from the black hole Great Annihilator B it looked like that I was going to get warped into another dimension.

Scorchio! (This HMC Wepai ZA-W e2-1400 A 1 was located 2,7 LS away from star and had a modest surface temperature of 2.734 K)

There was only one way IRL to celebrate my achievement. Some time ago I was flying around with my Asp and decided to have a stop at one of the two outposts in Peregrina. When I was departing the outpost I was hugely surprised by seeing another CMDR (whose name I've forgotten) there. Now we're talking about a backwater permit-locked system with hardly anything of interest that sees like 3 different CMDRs at best per 24 hours. Both of us were surprised of the encounter and subsequently had a friendly chat for maybe twenty minutes. The thing I remember best about that surprise meeting was the wine recommendation he gave that was for a specific French red wine Beaujolais Nouveau. Couple of weeks ago as I was planning this voyage I got one bottle of the mentioned wine and decided to save it for the moment of reaching Sag A*.

So here I am, telling you these stories while sipping delicious fruity French red wine. And my cargo hold still has 4 tons of Lavian Brandy in it What is there not to like this life about? :)

Less surprisingly I had a ten day break from the game with Intimidator Exploder sitting firmly somewhere halfway between Sag A* Supermassive and Source 2. Doing anything repetitive in a forced manner (like flying Federal Corvette from bubble to the galactic core) certainly entitles you for some time off that stuff. Well, back to business anyway. Time to go farm some neutrons and scan interesting star systems just to make this trip even somewhat financially viable.

Right now nobody can commend the captain of Intimidator Exploder for hasty progress. The 10-day stint from the bubble to Sag A* certainly took its toll when it comes to the interest towards exploration. After my last update, I made my way to the upper neutron fields and took the way back towards the bubble. Currently, my main point of interest is getting some money out of the trip by scanning any big $$$ stars and better-yielding planets on the way. Right now I'm sitting slightly below 8 kylies from Sag A* with slightly over 18 kylies remaining until getting back into the bubble. The journey back has been uneventful, apart from surprise encounter with O-B binary and a discovery of binary ringed ammonia worlds in one system.

My total jump count for the voyage so far sits at 2258. During the voyage I've discovered total of fourteen (14) ELW's and five (5) AW's, though I started spotting AW's when approximately 2/3rds from bubble to Sag A*. Of those ELW's, three have been located in a system whose main star is NS and one of them is actually orbiting the NS. I'm not even counting the number of BH's and NS's since they are so plentiful in the fields and only serve to generate profit.

EGNAIWN_EG-Y_F3596_Scorcher.jpg
A "nice" surprise was awaiting for me at EGNAIWN EG-Y F3596 as I jumped right between these binary beauties. Temp gauge climbed quite rapidly before getting sufficiently far away from the stars.

One of the systems I flew into included a nice surprise. I believe binary ringed ammonia worlds aren't particularly common. Those rings were rocky/icy scrap, though.

The return trip of Intimidator Exploder has progressed with such pace that the ship is almost back at home. And you can be certain that I'll be happy to be back from this undertaking. Next time when I dive into black I'll take another ship. Currently I'm sitting just below one kylie from my planned destination, the Gr8minds starport at Terra Mater system. There I should be able to sell some exploration data caches I've collected without fear of being authority scanned. As far as the system has been before, there will most likely be some retards trying to act like the biggest boys in the schoolyard with Eagle/Sidewinder/Adder kind of stuff. That would suit the captain of the ship: after being more than six weeks in the deep black hopping around from star to star like no tomorrow he has gotten REALLY bored during the process. With the jump total being somewhere near 3600 he'd just LOVE to mercilessly rub some novice wannabe NPC pirate 's face with multicannons and lasers. Just because the ship has them.

The trip back has consisted of neutron/BH farming, search for human inhabitable worlds and a slight detour to Eagle nebula. The nebula, to be frank, was quite unimpressive and provided nothing new after visiting the NGC 6357 nebula on my way. All those black holes and other warpy-warpy thingys near the core and the star density just spoiled me. Navigation-wise the trip back was bit unlike the coreward trip. Not even once I didn't spot a streak of two or more unscoopables barring the neutron fields. However, around 13K into the journey I had to descend away from the field (from 1200-1300 LY above the galactic plane to 600 LY) since I couldn't plot through the Norma Expanse with my lackluster 18.5 LY jump range. Currently, my ELW count for the trip is at 22 previously undiscovered plus one previously discovered. The most notable system, dubbed "Raili's Greenhouse" had one ELW and two WW TC's orbiting a class K star. I haven't dared to do any SRV landings just to make sure that I don't get killed to some fancy ship recall bug or become a victim of self-inflicted landing mishap. If I can make my guess, there's probably around 50 MCR worth of exploration data to be sold. And I'm not planning on taking any unnecessary risks with all that aboard!

I'll do a more detailed review of the trip after I reach inhabited space and sell whatever has been gathered during the voyage. Until then, stay tuned...

Red_giant_binary_neutron.jpg
I jumped into a system with two neutron stars and an red giant. That giant is several hundred LS's away from the location and the main neutron is highlighted. No room for getting distracted with piloting there...

Water_world_rings.jpg
A ringed water world was found somewhere in the black. So beautiful, so tranquil, so full of wonders waiting to be discovered.

Gas_giant_9_83_ls.jpg
I found a gas giant orbiting a star just 9.83 LS away from the main star. It looked surprisingly large from the point of entry...

Gas_giant_3_48_ls.jpg
...until several jumps later I found a gas giant that orbited 3.48 LS away. Now THAT was close!

Unimpressive_nebula.jpg
The Eagle Nebula failed to impress after what the ship had seen during the last six weeks.

At 24th of February 3302 at 17:00:55 time the Intimidator Exploder touched down on Gr8minds starport in Terra Mater system, concluding the longest-lasting and highest amount of systems tallying voyage done so far with Federal Corvette class starship. Not a single insect wanted to disrupt the voyage, much to the annoyance of the twitchy-fingered captain of the ship. The ship was the second Federal Corvette ever to reach Sagittarius A*, being beated by approximately three weeks by CMDR Zeel who buckyballed his way from the bubble to the core in just two and half days, as opposed against the eleven-day voyage of the Intimidator Exploder. So, what were the final conclusions and statistics of the voyage?

Total duration of the trip: 46 days, of which 29 days included any travel at all.
Largest amount of jumps for one day: 303 (17th of January 3302), most of the days fell in region between 90-175 jumps.
Exploration profits: 89,513,146 CR
Repairs: Negligible, since "repair all" seems to mend the ship integrity as well for the amount indicated. Integrity repair would've been 1.879.695 CR and rest of the repairs was a small amount.
Distance traveled: Around 61,000 LYs
Hyperspace jumps: 3,689
Systems visited: 3,683
First discoveries of Earth-like worlds: 22
First discoveries of Ammonia worlds: 9
Exploration rank: From Pioneer 0 % to Pioneer 89 %

I didn't count black holes, neutron stars or water worlds since I was only scanning them for profit. In the neutron fields I scanned noticeable amount of them on top of checking out some carbon stars and Herbig disco balls.

So what should I say about this trip? I will never, EVER again go to the core with a Federal Corvette. That jump range makes sure that you don't get the sense of progress that makes you feel like you are advancing towards something. One day you log in and jump like maniac for many hours. In the end, you are less than 2 kylies away from your starting point. The ship just feels like it's going nowhere, especially when you get out from the dense area around the core (Norma expanse and further out from there). The supercruise behavior, while considerably better than in Anaconda, left something to be desired. The sensation of responsiveness after jumping from Vette to A-specced Asp Explorer was something you just can't describe with words. The sceneries? At times they were great, especially twiddling with black holes was quite mind-blowing. I did visit only two nebulas during the trip and they seem to have a sort of "when you've seen several, you've seen all of them" kind of feel on them. I was too afraid to lose my data for any game related issues, especially with reports of weird crashes coming in from DW expeditioneers, and thus I decided not to land on any planet after the only SRV excursion of the trip somewhere in the Boeft sector.

The best part? The Department of Awesome Timing (Tm) paid me a visit: Half a hour after selling all the exploration data I learned about the 29th February exploration CG for the first time. At that point I felt slightly annoyed since there would've been a LOT of extra credits to be made. And with exploration profits just 10M creds shy of rank Elite I decided to jump into my trusty Asp Explorer King Crimson and went two kylies eastwards to see if there is something worth creds. After visiting approximately 300 systems and intensive WW/HMC-TC scanning I returned to Groombridge 34 to sell the cartographic data. End result? 11M CR's worth of data sold and exploration rank of Elite! \o/

Now I've been left to wonder whether there is something special to gain while exploring or if my exploring days are over. Only time will tell but at least I can tell that I've seen the center of the galaxy! Right now I feel like I should be smashing someone's face in CZ/RES. :D
