Modes talk to other commanders?

I say I play solo all the time, but this arvo I have been doing the same old same old in open.
An assasin was after me in solo, then in open. He died. He was an NPC. Just as dead in open as in solo.

Now to the gist of my problem.

Commander Blain Crighton sent me an o7. It shows direct in brackets.
I tried an answer. It shows Local in brackets, followed by o7 (same as he sent me)
Did Blain receive my answer or do I have to do something else? :S

If he was still in the same instance then he should have received the message.

Use the "tab" key to cycle through potential recipients, i.e. Wing, those who have direct messaged you, local.

I had trouble with this as ED is my first MMO and I had zero experience with interacting with real people in-game. I figure out the 'tab' key workings (as Robert described) and manage to stumble along trying to o7 CMDRs I meet in Mobius_PvE.

Sometimes it's cool. I was pulling into 'home' last night at Jameson and I was greeted by and given a friend request by Mobius himself. I had to fumble around a bit to respond to the friend request, but figured it out. :)
