Tamichan Franchise Zoo’s

After doing 2/3 of the Campaign, I have done a very simple breeder zoo, to get some animals and points. Now I am working on my first more dedicated franchise zoo, putting more work into the details and layout. The Zoo is located in 福岡市 Prefecture in the mountain rich area, just outside 福岡市 city, on the island of Kyūshū, southern Japan. All streets and location names will be taken from the central area of 福岡市 City. The Name of the Zoo is Tamichan 福岡市. (Had to use the Japanese letters, as the city name 福岡市 was considered a restricted word). It’s a work in progress, currently the Zoo has just 5 habitats with a total of 52 animals. A little more than 1600 guests. The Tamichan Franchise manager, do not expect the zoo to become very large, maybe 12 – 15 habitats.

The Black and White Lemur habitat was the first to receive animals, from Kagoshima breeding zoo. Today it holds 16 individuals, 6 youngster and 10 adults, probably too much have to release some soon. The zoo keeper’s pride is two years old “Nyantsa”, a splendid example of the species. Expected to become a star in the future breeding program, when her day comes.

Akasaka Square, it a small square at the intersection of Showa dori, Meiji-dor and Taihaku dori. On one side a small house contains an ATM machine on the other a public toilet is flanked by a small pond.

Meiji Dori is a wide gravel road, leading through the subtropical forest from Akasaka up to Tenjin. It has no shops or other facilities, but connect to paths leading to two habitats. Amur Leopard and Japanese Macaque.

The current male Amur Leopard “Boris”, was born in the zoo, from parents imported from Kagoshima breeding Zoo. He is almost 10 years old. To counter inbreeding, “Boris” siblings have been sold to other Zoo’s. A black fur adult female, today 11 years old “Ekaterina”, was acquired from Pandala Soloiskehave. The couple got two cubs.

The Japanese Macaque habitat currently holds 18 animals out of which 12 are adults. Eight animals were brought in from different Zoo’s to start a population, the youngest ten was born here. In general, the population consists of rather small and weak animals, but of course we need this famous Japanese spices and can try to improve on that later.

5 years have gone by, since the original map of the Zoo was posted. In the meantime, the area north of Ohori Koen, has been developed with the inclusion of three new habitats, Saltwater Crocodile, Giant Otter and Capybara. Watanabe-dori was turned into an educational zone with information board, street food stalls and shops were added around Ohori Koen.

Tenjin is a shopping district located between Meiji-dori and Nakagawa. The main square includes some food and drink stalls, a cash machine and public toilets.

A short walk towards east, leads to Riverview Yakitori Tenjin Restaurant, located next to Nakagawa River and Furuhashi Bridge.

Watanabe-dori is a curved paved road running from Furuhashi Bridge to Ohori Koen. Inside the curve several educational boards will face the passing visitors, with information on environmental issues. Watanabe-dori connects to paths leading to Nile Monitor and Asian Small-Clawed Otter habitats.

The Nile Monitor habitat, includes the entire part of Nakagawa River located south of Furuhashi Bridge. As well as a large stone cave where the animals sleep. The habitat began with a few animals from Kagoshima breeding zoo. Today one male is left born in Kagoshima. The other eight animals were all born here. To counter inbreeding, just days ago, a strong and large four years old male was acquired from Bee-za Zoo, currently in the quarantine center at Hakata village.

The Asian Small-Clawed Otter habitat was raised above street level to include a large water tank, giving the visitors a perfect view of the animals’ underwater activities. Also, in the case of the Small-Clawed Otters, the core of the population consists of offspring from adults brought in from Kagoshima. Only one female was brought in from another zoo 4 months ago, to avoid inbreeding.

Ohori Koen is a large square, composed by a central flower bed, surrounded by a circular paved road. The square contains several food and drink stalls, a cash machine and public toilets. The plan is that in the future this will become the location of an east entrance. The square provide access to paths leading to Saltwater Crocodile, Giant Otter and Capybara habitats.

The Saltwater Crocodile habitat, take up the parts of Nakagawa, close to the Takitori Resturant. It was originally populated with three very young crocodile siblings from Kagoshima Breeding Zoo, they have now grown and it is time to sell two and get new blood into the habitat from another zoo. A 14 years old male have been acquired from Minitreez Zoo, currently awaiting release from quarantine.

East of the Crocodiles we got the Giant Odder habitat, taking up the 2nd half of the north Nakagawa River Delta. Originally two adults were acquired, a 2.9 years old male from ZooParc Gütersich and a 3.1 years old female from Graceland Park. Today the couple have got two young “boys” Alejandro and Pedro, born a little more than a year ago.

The last habitat belonging to the river section, is the Capybara habitat located north east of Ohori Koen. The visitors will be led northeast around the river to a habitat that is actually not a part of the river delta, but instead contains an artificial lake to fulfill the species water requirement. Originally 5 adults were imported from Kagoshima. They breed quite fast and its a constant issue to keep the population growth under control.

The Kagoshima breeding zoo was closed, its purpose was fulfilled as a starting point for the Tamichan Franchise Zoo’s. Instead, a more focused facility was opened near Roskilde in Denmark. Risø Experimental Wildlife Rescue Center, informally known as Rescue Center DK. The center will be used to breed few delicate species in several habitats, to counter inbreeding of important species. At first the center will only work with the Amur Leopards.
In the Japanese Zoo a male leopard named Konstantine, was acquired from Frontier Franchise Zoo’s, unusual good quality compared to their usual standards. The female Valeriya is exceptional large and strong, they should be able to breed, nice cubs together. There are also two cops in the habitat from different parents, imported from Kagoshima before it was closed.

East of Hakata Village and Showa Dori a new road was added, currently it has no facilities, just connect the new Siamang habitat to the zoo.

Siamang habitat was populated with 6 adults, two male and four female, all acquired from Frontier Franchise Zoo’s. The strongest and seemingly healthiest a male named Panuta.

It is now 22 years since the construction of the Zoo at Kyūshū began or 10 years since my first post. Today we got 10 habitats and one Exhibit. The Zoo has a little more than 3000 daily visitors. Fifteen different shops and two restaurants service the need of the guests.

A male Bornean Orangutan called Dumadi, was bought from Frontier Franchise Zoo’s, and brought into the Siamang habitat, we are still looking for a suitable “lover” for him.

Taisho-dori was extended and a new road was added, Kokutai-doro. Together surrounding a large square with room for a new restaurant. At the right side of Taisho-dori, seen from Showa dori (left on the picture) several shops and a public toilet was added.

Kokutai-doro lead to the Western Chimpanzee habitat. The dominant male Wambua was acquired from WOLF’s Zoo, his six lady’s all comes from Frontier Franchise Zoo’s. Five-month-old Daudi, was born here, son of Aminah. His father was Ogbonna who is no longer in the zoo. Daudi is without contest the guest favorite of all animals in the zoo.

We are now in the beginning of Year 26. About 3650 guests visit the zoo every day. The old main gate was demolished, the main entrance is now located at the north end of Taisho dori, also the Tochoji Temple Pagoda (information) was moved to Taisho dori.

Main Entry Gate, close up.

The Castel used as east entrance was “stolen” from Yuan Liang’s brilliant 玉海天宫(Chinese garden YuHai), definitely worth a visit !

When we last heard about the Black and White Lemur habitat 14 years ago, two years old “Nyantsa”, was expected to become the future star in the breeding program. Resently the elderly and infertile dominent female Tsiky was rehomed. 16 years old “Nyantsa” is the most likely Crown Princess, although her 12 years old daughter “Felana” might try to overpass her mother, we wil see what happens in the coming months. “Nyantsa” have given birth to 8 children, out of which 6 is still in this zoo, “Felana” had three babys, all still in the zoo. Curently there are 18 animals in the habitat, 8 youngsters and 10 adults.

In the Amur Leopard habitat “Valeriya”, the daughter of “Boris”, son of the original couple imported from Kagoshima breeding Zoo and black fur “Ekaterina” acquired from Pandala Soloiskehave, is now 15 years old and it is no longer likely that she will be able to give birth to more cups. Never the less she will not be sold, due to her legendary status in the zoo, she can only be replaced after her death. “Valeriya” had 5 cups, her latest two sons, she got with current male “Boris 2nd” is still in the habitat, of the three cups she had with her first male Konstantine one was sold, two transferred to Risø Experimental Wildlife Rescue Center.

The market for Japanese Macaque have been quite weak, our habitat still contains rather small and weak monkeys, although it has improved a little over the latest 10 years. Sayuri the largest and strongest female in the group is now 4.5 years old and fertile, hopefully giving birth to some strong males, which we seriously need.

Summer 26

At Tenjin East, a fresh juice stall opened at the south side of the squire, opposite to the Yakitori restaurant. The Tenjin area and Nakagawa Bridge is clearly the busiest area of the zoo. 36% of all food and drink refreshments are served at Tenjin.
