"Target Body: Currently Unknown. Scan Required"...What kind of scan and of what?

I am currently doing an assassination mission. When I got to the target system and scanned the nav beacon I was told there was no trace of my target and I had to fly somewhere else to meet an informant. I dropped into the system, scanned the nav beacon, got nothing so went looking for this informant, we sort of found each other, I flew after him and when we dropped out of warp he said "oh he's around here somewhere" or something to that effect. Anyway when I accept that message my mission updates and says:

Target Body: Currently Unknown. Scan Required

But what type of scan is it? I have been back to the nav beacon and scanned it and it didn't change anything, so I am working through the system, planet to planet scanning all ships and signal sources, but I don't know if I am wasting my time, the target time has long passed, so I am wondering if anyone can give me any pointers?

Sadly I didn't have one on the ship I was in, I have since fitted one but gave up on the mission.

If anyone can answer this for future reference it would be handy. Sadly I had spent far too long on the mission for comparatively little reward.

Scanning Nav beacons was a bit hit and miss for me on my first such mission..instructions were a bit vague..
But I found out you have to drop out of supercruise at the Nav beacon..
then target the Nav Beacon Proper and scan it by pointing your ship at it a few seconds till it registers
in the lower left side of your HUD..not easy to do if theres a lot of hostile ships trying to blow you up :)
This works with just the normal sensors built into the ship..no need for a Detailed Surface Scanner..
However.. an Advanced Discovery Scanner does away with the need to drop out of SC ...just honk the system.
I believe Basic Discovery Scanner also can be used for these missions but it doesnt reveal as much whats in the system as Advanced does.

If there is an informant, he'll chat you up and then go to supercruise. Apparently, you then have to scan his wake by using a wake scanner so that you'll know where he went, and can follow him.

I could never be bothered to do that, so when I am told to see an informant, I give my employer the single-digit salute, abandon the mission and move on. :D

You need to be in SC and point at object, you inbuilt scanner will resolve planetary object when you are within a certain distance.

for Suns it's about 1000ls, gas giants 800ls, large planets 100ls and small moons 10ls or less . Apologies if these are wrong as this is from memory I haven't scanned recently.

None of the suggested solutions works. I was told the target system by the informant and that unknown body scan is required. There is only one kind of scan I can do in that system - scan the nav beacon, which I did and nothing happend. I can't scan the bodies because these are already scanned. I try to enjoy the game, but these mission are huge PITA.

I was failing with this and wanted to abandon the mission, only to realize that the informant data goes to... (drumroll)

..the mission description.

And yes, it was there all along just above the ABANDON button. D'oh!!!
