Target highest threat - help please

Hi,

I use an xbox360 controller to play Elite and I've custom bound the keys and everything is fine, but the 'Target Highest Threat' function isn't working as I had expected... which might just be me.

In a combat situation such as attacking a wing of two, after destroying the first ship I would expect to be able to now target the second ship who is firing on me, but pressing that option doesn't work. I realised that if I hold the buttons down (A + down d-pad) it does show the target who's attacking me, in the far left panel, but it won't 'select' it. When I let go of the buttons it goes away.

Am I doing something wrong or was I expecting the wrong thing?

Thanks

I use target highest threat quite a bit & it does fail to target anything quite often. I also have target next/previous hostile too, which always works but may not select the one you want. You can go through them until you get the one you want though.

I think the reason highest threat doesn't always work is due to that highest threat not being targetable (eg low temp or too far away) at the time you press the button.

Just because it's attacking you doesn't mean it's the highest threat. That little Cobra MKIII may be firing at you, but the hostile Corvette is still way more of a threat (if you're in-range of both and can sense their heat signature).

The thing is, it doesn't select anything. I've been at resource sites, on kill missions, and ships that are within a couple of km's and firing at me won't be selected. My ship is syaing I'm under attack so it seems like a reasonable threat to me. But, as I said, it will 'show' the ship firing at me if I hold the buttons down, but not keep it selected.

I've got next/previous hostile bound to left d-pad / right d-pad but they are the same result as above. Maybe I just need to experiment more with it. At least it appears to work as I expected for you guys, so there is hope... : )

It would be nice if it targets your attacker. I usually cycle through hostile contacts to find that pesky eagle sniping me with rails.

Would be nice if there was setting under ship functions. We can change things like target leading or following, linear or logarithmic radar, but not what we consider our highest priority targets.

Do you also have a way to select non hostile targets? I use B+dpad up/down to select hostile targets, and A+dpad up/down to select all targets. And then A+dpad left/right to select target subsystems.

No, I've just got the A-button as general select target ahead. That seems to do me quite well for selecting targets. I've either selected out-of-view targets from my Contacts tab, or from the Nav tab. I haven't found any reason to need non hostile targets in a hurry yet. Anything I've got set at the moment is a work in progress of course.

I haven't had chance yet to try 'next/previous hostile' as a+up / a+down but thats going to be my next attempt. I do like the idea of having sub-system selection on the controller as I've been starting to target those more and more, but presently using the keyboard.

I've got the B-button set for nav/coms/ship panel. Maybe thats called head look... I use that a lot so would rather keep it that way if I can.

Thanks for all the help from everyone. o7

I finally got to the bottom of this one. Thought I’d reply for the benefit of anyone else with this issue in the future. It was simple enough... just to recap;

I had button A mapped to select target In front.
i had A + d-pad up to select next highest threat.

The problem was that when I pressed “A + d-pad up” it highlighted the target in the lower left panel, but only so long as I held the buttons down. When I let go it un-selected.

The solution... Hold the A-button. Press and hold “d-pad up”. Let go of A-button. Target/highest threat stays selected.

Clearly what I’ve been doing is letting go of the A-button last, which was probably cancelling out the other instruction and trying to select whatever is in front. Hope that makes sense. I want A + left/right to select sub targets so I expect I’ll have to do the same, release A before releasing left/right. Sounds stupid now, but there you go.

Again, thanks for everyone’s help! Fly safe Commanders! o7
