Newcomer / Intro targeting enemy ship--..Can't see them!

Benn in combat with NPC pirate ships about 4 times during cargo runs... I get a target lock and can see the "target bracket", but cannot see the actual enemy ship unless they come real close.. Is this normal or do I need to adjust my graphics?

I can hit them and do damage, but no visual of hits...I know is dark in Space and you can't have them glowing pink :) , but actually seeing the bad guys would be nice.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you take a screenshot or make a video? It may be something about your graphics, but I think it's just the distance.

If you are fighting something like Sidewinder, Eagle or Viper, they are fairly small ships. Well, "small" anyway. Small ans smaller medium ships are sub 50 meters long.
The typical engagement in Elite takes place between 1-3 kilometers. So as you can imagine, a 20m ship won't be much bigger than a pixel at 3 kilometers. That's why the brackets are there to help you.

Learn to read them. From "above" or "below" the target it's quite easy to see which way the triangle is heading. And if the ship is on the same plane as you brackets like this: < > mean the ship is flying away from you and bracket like this: > < means the ship is flying towards you.

Sounds like a graphics issue, specifically draw distance (the game isn't adding the data until a certain distance) or an LOD issue (distant objects are rendered differently than close objects).

I'd submit a ticket to support to see if they can help you out, it definitely shouldn't be happening. Other than that, updating your graphics drivers would be my first stop. After that, you'd be looking at tweaking individual settings to find a fix, when it could also be corrupted data. Best contacting support.

Just to add if you have Nvidia graphics you can use their Geforce Experience (included in the driver download, make sure you have the latest btw) to improve the graphic settings. It does a pretty good job IMO , it detects the installed games, just select ED and it gives you a comparison list of current and new settings, just click the Optmize button and save changes.

What size monitor and resolution do you have? Obviously the larger and higher resolution the better. Unfortunately the art of electronically zooming the HUD display to see your target so much more easily was lost back in mists of time, approximately 1300 years ago in the 1st half of the 21st Century :S

Just to add if you have Nvidia graphics you can use their Geforce Experience ........

Or you can not and so save running unnecessary processes. I hate the "experience" experience and will not install it, not even for recording, ever since you had to "log on" to have it functional.

I just use the "Manage 3D settings" in the Nvidia control panel to have my own control of the stuff "experience" does for you.

On the driver point... I'm always wary about installing the latest as I've had nasty past experiences doing so. If my driver is working, I tend not to try and fix it. YMMV so don't take this post as gospel or good advice.

So far I've very rarely had any issues installing the latest driver, perhaps once or twice in 23 years since W95. But I guess it depends on what games and apps are installed as well as which graphics hardware is being used.

I tried running ED with Geforce Experience installed and also uninstalled using an SSD. In my rig there was no difference in FPS or any other glitch I could detect with it installed. Having said that I usually turn off other unnecessary processes before starting up ED.
