targeting from cockpit

Has it been discussed about a way to target stars from the cockpit? it would be helpful to be able to mark them and then see the marker from the galaxy map. any thoughts?

It would be a nice thing to have, but I imagine that it would be difficult to implement, especially where the star density is high.

I agree it would be nice. It seems like a fairly difficult thing, however, to make a game capable of targeting any star in a sky full of billions at any time. I'd love to be proved wrong, however.

I would love a feature like this - and I would love to see some kind of direction indicator on the HUD, too.

The easiest thing to implement would be to show your ship's current facing on the galaxy map - point your ship at whichever object it is you're curious about, switch to the galaxy map and have a line extending in that direction. And perhaps a cone showing your current forward field of view.

yup, i way thinking the same thing. would be so cool to have a vector plotted on the gal map. Took ages to work out where i was facing in my ship, then looking on the map.

Yeah, now that would be a handy thing indeed and might be quite doable, from a development perspective. Not being a dev it's impossible for me to say, of course, but it seems somewhat simpler than having each star able to be targeted from the main view, as nice as that would be. I'd imagine even having only those stars within jump range be targetable would quickly cause some lag unless you're in a vessel with a very small jump range.

I'd especially like to have some sort of "compass" in the cockpit view. I'm uncertain exactly how difficult that would be to do in a way which is meaningful and yet doesn't just clutter up the cockpit with fairly useless information. Maybe a way to switch out to different UI modes, similar to how we have one for combat, one for SC, and one for planetary landings. Add a navigation mode we could toggle on and off, perhaps.

Basically that is why i was looking for a targeting system. It would be very helpful to be able to know what direction you are facing and then have that show on the galaxy map. That would make searching for something, or at least seeing what it is, a bit easier. But onward and upward...

Thank you all

This would be beautiful! I would love to be able to determine my direction in the sky/on the map.

You can kind-of/sort-of do this by targeting a system that's far away, and then eyeballing the angle between it in your HUD and the direction you're facing. It's a huge pain in the ass, though, and how well you can do it is highly dependent on the visibility from your cockpit.
