Newcomer / Intro Targeting modules

I have been experimenting with targeting modules. In certain ships certain modules appear to be vulnerable. With Alliance ships I've have had some success targeting the drives then the power plant. With the ship generally exploding before the armour runs out. With the Viper the power plant seems a worthwhile target straight away. However I have also targeted the drives on an Anaconda. Ha ha it seemed to say. I'm guessing people that do this have their own approaches for different types of ship.

When I'm fighting a bigger ship than my own, I usually go straight for the powerplant. If targeting the drives made the ship immobile for good, I'd go for them. If targeting weapons made them REALLY inoperable, I'd do that, too. But things don't work like that in Elite, unfortunately, so the only module which destruction yields immediate results is the powerplant. So I go for that.
There are some tricks you have to learn, though, like where exactly is the powerplant placed on each ship. Because unless you have railguns, it matters whether you're shooting the module directly, or you're trying to puch through the whole ship to damage it. And some ships with a really hard hull like Cutter, you simply won't pierce all the way through from some angles.
So positioning and hitting the module from the correct side is key.

For me it depends on the tactical situation not so much the ship type. If a ship is likely to try to jump away (high-ranked NPCs), I target its FSD. If I'm fighting a tough ship (shield cell banks, armour) I target its Powerplant. If a ship is running away, I target its Drives. Other than FSD, Powerplant and Drives I only target weapons (external modules) when I have missiles loaded.
