All of the specks of light that are present when you look out of your cockpit are actual places that correspond to places on the galaxy map.
Frequently I'll see something that piques my interest yet the chances of matching what you see through your pilot's eye view to the galaxy map are next to impossible. You could be looking at a local star or a highly luminous class O supergiant several thousand light years away.
It would be great to have some kind of telescope or monocle view that would allow you to isolate a part of the sky box and allow you to select what you see as a destination or link you to it on the 3d map.
