I'll start with a happening I had last night in ESO.

I was doing some overland questing and in my travels, I found a Redguard style motif book in a bag aboard a Maormer ship.

Thing is I'd already used the book a few days prior after a bit of stealing from NPC chests.

There was another player nearby, and he was low level & Imperial race, so I figured that chances were he didn't know the style.

So, I chased him up and invited to trade, gave him the book for free, and popped a message saying that I didn't need the book.

End of story right?

Nope.

He stalked me for the next hour. I was only able to lose him by baiting him to trigger a hostile mob, at which point I summoned my horse and bolted away. :p

It's quite amusing really.

What funny stories from MMO land do you have?

A few months into playing WoW, I hopped on a RP server and finished the starting area for humans in the abbey or whatever it was called. As I made my way out into Elwynn forest there was a small crossroads with a big inn. As I made my way towards it I started seeing all this x rated emoting and chat (All in character). Determined to find the source I looked around and then finally upstairs in the inn where there's a massive bed room with a four post canopy bed. Two high level players were guarding the entrance to the room and they both whispered me telling me to leave, it was a private party. In true mmo fashion I walked through them (No collision detection, my biggest pet peeve with wow pvp) into the room and low and behold there were probably 10-15 stripped down to under garments female characters literally having an orgy all around this one high level human male in magnificent armor (He looked like a king, he even had a crown). I laughed so hard I was crying, and it only got worse as the entire thing ground to a halt and everybody turned and looked at me. The king started yelling for his guards and the two from the door came in trying to block my view telling me to leave.

It was the most hilarious thing I ever encountered in a video game and the best part was everything they did was in character with proper emoting / chat channels used. I really felt like I stumbled into a very private scene and respectfully left. I was pretty new to the game, It had only been out a few months. But I learned something very important. I was never playing on a rp server again lol.

That's... Beautiful.

I need to step up my game.

Yeah I got one, also WoW. While still a quite new player I decided to check out the deep run tram (WoW has two main continents and there's an underground tram you can catch which takes you under the ocean from one continent to the other, takes about 5 mins I guess, once the tram you're waiting for has arrived). Anyway, I was fooling around and I fell off quite early into the journey. Oh well I thought (always up for an off-script adventure), I'll just walk to the other side along the tracks. So I'm merrily plodding along, must have been going for about 10mins when I start to make out someone coming towards me. At first I thought it might be an NPC (there are rats down in the subway stations so it seemed possible). But no, it was another player who'd fallen off his tram going the other way and decided to do exactly the same thing. We shared some emotes and a lot of laughs and eventually parted company and continued our lonely trudge. I don't know what the odds of that happening are but it seemed extraordinary at the time and was a formative moment in my love of emergent gameplay! [haha]

Friday night - Planetside 1 - Server Emerald. Faction VS. Location Dagda Interlink, Forseral. 15 of us platooned up. We back hacked Dagda to divert forces from the main fight on Ishundar. The TR responded and attempted to resecure, they pop locked the server. 15 of us held off 133 TR for half an hour until more VS noticed we had started an interfarm. Because of so many scrubs and Maxfits had arrived at our fight we started to push out of Dagada to the nearby bases and the Interfarm was over, we decided to go back to Ishundar. The TR's home cont was Forseral at the time so they remained to defend it. We started taking bases by ghost hacking on Ishundar.

The NC showed up by had no link to the bases we hacked, so the undefended hacks went through. The NC started to gain ground too. Meanwhile the TR were kicking us off of Forseral and were returning to Ishundar. We were jammed in the middle of two enemy factions, it was great. we finally got pushed to the northernmost Tech plant Girru. Which was ideal because we could pull Reavers and smash their armour and AMS respawn vehicles. Eventually, all three factions pop locked Ish.

The war raged hard. Everyone had tech so armour and reavers were aplenty. Orbital strikes were going off on deployed AMS'es left right and center. Tanks dropping shells on the zerg and skyguards lighting up the sky. It was a kill fest for the pros and a slaughter for the noobs. such is Planetside 1 and it's skill based combat where a skilled player can take on multiple foes and win. The VS held Girru all of Friday night. I went to bed early hours Saturday with a ridiculous K/D ratio. I awoke late morning Saturday and to my surprise the battle for Girru was still raging. In fact it raged right up until 10 am Monday morning.

One of the most fun weekends in gaming I have ever had. No game will ever top that. To this day I don't believe a game has been developed since, with such nuanced and diverse play styles in mind. You really were the master of your own reality in that game. So much to do, so many things away from combat that affected the flow of battle. It was all emergent too.

Waaay back in the day, in the original Everquest, I was playing a female elf. I often enjoy female characters in game, they are more fun to watch. Anyway, I'm just running around the starter area, doing quests and whatnot, and this other player comes up and stands right in front of me. I emoted a *wave* and suddenly he (I assume the player was male) was very interested in me.

"You r a god loking womon" he typed (literally, that's what he typed).

So I told him I'd give him a kiss if he got me 10 gold (a small fortune). And he ran off to try to get money! I was rolling. I guess it never occurred to him that most players of MMOs were male, especially back then.

He never did get me my gold, though. He tried to buy me off with some armor, which I took. But he never got a kiss, not for armor! Sheesh! :D

10 gold? You could loot that off rats ;) All about the pp baby.

But yes...original EQ. What a beautiful game.

Emote system was genius. Just type /emote and whatever you want after and it appeared as a non-chat message.

There was something amazing about typing "/emote pickpocketed YOU. You lost 6 gold!", and watching people get lairy until they realised...

Outta interest, you tried p1999?

I had a Level 1 Human Paladin named ChrisHanson I sometimes used to patrol those filthy Inns in Elwynn. He berated many a pedo and fury!

Another WoW one, a guild I was in would sometimes camp portals with a string of Death Knights (like 30+) all spaced out to chain death grip unsuspecting arrivals to a location where a Priest or Druid could then blast them off the edge of the map or a cliff or w/e. It was quite the coordinated undertaking and great fun to watch someone jerked across a map then blown to their (sometimes) death.

Leaving the bank in EQ with a bunch of coin and being to weighted down to move... ya I did that more than once.

Ah, ERPers, they get around.

Its one argument against space legs in ED. Once we have them, the ERPers will come. :D

There is a NWN2 persistent server that caters to them. Kindgom of Haven. Check it out if you want to see some funny stuff.

A long time ago i started working on the character classes from the Book of Erotic Fantasy to put into NWN2. Didn't get very far, switched to doing stuff from Unearthed Arcana instead. But i knew one of the devs from Haven who also worked on our server and they might have taken my work or just started implementing for that server as they would have been a perfect fit.

Guess one of the funny parts that happened not long ago was a horse emote conga chain we started in ESO. We were on the Gold Coast, and bored out of our minds, so we all got on our identical imperial mounts, and started rhythmically spamming the space bar for the horse to rear. Then some rando came along and joined in.. then another.. then another.. we ended up with a line of imperial horses doing the rearing Mexican wave style.

And the other thing that happens to us occasionally is that people think we are NPCs. We used to kill a mob group, then take their places with random emotes like sitting on their chairs, eating apples or just leaning against the wall using the coin toss emote. We had quite a few murderhobos come along trying to shank us, one even tried to sneak up from behind to use the Assassin Blade. It was quite hilarious.
