Terms of Use for Elite Dangerous Footage

I'll let you into a secret: this is exactly why I'm never going to actually make anything. I have big ideas, pretend that I'm capable of making something worth the time to upload, then put it off until the idea fades away naturally and I don't have to face the realisation that I'm not and never could be.

I've been watching a lot of, I think they call them 'video essays' these days and it kind of got me inspired momentarily. But I just need to ride it out for a day or two and that sense of inspiration will pass, like it always has for writing or playing music, drawing/painting, programming, learning languages and everything else.
I have a nice guitar. I can play a few intros on it. That's it.

But when these bizarre articles kick in (in a couple of years?) we're in for all manner of ill considered nonsense. eg: Any image, video or bit of music used/published will require proof (eg: written consent) it is not enfringing copyright. eg: It's going to really be an issue to places like Youtube and the people who publish on it.

This is something that I don't think a lot of people truly understand.

Article 13 of the EU Copyright Directive places the responsibility on PLATFORMS to ensure that they don't allow any copyrighted materials to be uploaded or broadcast.

In laymans terms, that means FDev might say it's okay for people to display footage of ED in Youtube videos but Youtube, themselves, might refuse to allow people to upload footage of ED because Youtube have no way of knowing FDev have said it's okay.

Course, it's vaguely possible that platforms such as Youtube could attempt to fulfill their responsibilities with something as simple as a "this video contains no material which is the copyrighted property of another party" tick-box but, depending on how punitive the EU is feeling, that might not be a risk platforms are willing to take.

If companies such as FDev wanted to take advantage of creators to publicise their products, they really should have done more to oppose Article 13, I'm afraid. :(

Have a go. Do something with no intention whatsoever of publishing it, but just for your personal amusement. Tweak it a bit here and there, add stuff you think you should after watching it, take stuff away that you don’t like. Don’t put a time frame on it, just enjoy the process. I guarantee you that at the end of it, you’ll have satisfaction, and something that is a lot better than you imagine it could be :)

I play a guitar with no prospect or intention of playing on stage, but I enjoy it immensely, and I get that little endorphin reward buzz when I figure out something new with it!

Last week, I started messing with css style sheets, which I have never touched before. Initially, it was just a couple of tweaks. By yesterday, I realised I had come up with quite a large custom style which works rather well for the most part - but that wasn’t where I thought I would end up :D Of course there are lots of things I would still like to do with it, and I’m certainly not an expert with it, but it made me feel pretty good to know I had done it.

So have a go and enjoy yourself. You’ve nothing to lose except some time out of your day :)
