Test driving ships before you buy

What do others think, would you like to be able to test drive a ship before you buy it ?
It could be as simple as taking it out of a station and flying it around and going back or going on a shakedown cruise, you could include weapons testing against drones or even NPC's, you are liable for damage/fines etc.
It's time limited and returns you back to the station it came from.

How about being able to nick off with it during the test drive? Instant bounty placed on your head, NPCs aligned with the shipyard chasing you all around the galaxy, CMDRs homing in on your bounty and all this because you fancied the look of the Imperial Eagle ;)

I suggested this before. Thought it would be good to be part of the training module (so it doesn't effect any type of play) and FD have a small system set up with a station and platform, even a RES. The station has every ship and every module available so you can configure it how you want, then take it out for a spin and even try the weapons against some NPC's. Include a nice screen explaining the cost AND the insurance.

Would save a lot of confusion when actually using your hard earned credits later on ...

I doubt this will be put in because many of us effectively get this during beta tests. Nice idea though could maybe be done as a simulator type thing!

Test drive could very well be an in-universe flight simulator.

Excellent idea, I saved for ages to get a Python or FDL, bought the FDL first and realised I didn't like it almost instantly. Very expensive test drive to then sell it and buy the Python. It would be fine to pay a test drive fee but 10% of ships price is excessive.

My suggestion is for bulletin board missions to fly someone else's ship from one station to another, with a corresponding return mission lined up. If you can't afford the rebuy cost, you're not allowed to take the mission, but otherwise it would let you test-fly a hull before purchasing it.

It is possible to test drive ships already: you are chaged of the total price as a bail and you can keep the ship as long as you need to test drive it.
After that, if you liked it you can fly away with and if you did not you can give it back to the shipyard with just the 10% charge.

The problem is upgrading - there are numerous different possibilities for a ship and they change significantly as you upgrade
.
saw CMDR Blackhogg saying he bought and then sold an FDL - upgrading an FDL can make it a much different beastie
.
Don't see the point myself

Don't see a need at all. ED end game is to own all ships. :)

That is the end game to YOU.
The end game for "I want it all and I want it now" childs is to test drive all the ships for free and then throw the game into the garbage to start play another pewpew game as soon as possible.

How about the 10% rental fee that's already in game? It could be worse...

Was just thinking about this. Give some more meaning to the naval ranks. "Admiral - we've got this mission for you, you'll need an Anaconda...but we notice you don't have one so High Command's letting you take command of this one. High Command also said if you blow it up you'll be busted back to Ensign." Then you can decide if you want to take the risk. :)

I'm against test drives, people need to pick ships carefully or pay a 10 percent fee but that was a little harsh lol

Ship manufacturers should have a presence on the bulletin board like factions and give out missions... deliver a new ship to a customer in another system, destroy rival manufacturer ships, etc
