Testing my bass shakers (and gaming platform preview)

A while back I bought 4 bass shakers for my Elite gaming platform.

They're 100W 4Ohm with a frequency range of 28 to 55 Hz (or so they claim). Although being budget models these still weigh 0.7 Kg a piece. Not too bad IMHO. In fact, if you open up an Aurasound bass shaker you'll see it's the same unit. Great value as they cost me only 11 euro a piece + 24 euro shipping, brand new. Search eBay.de for "bodyshaker" to find them.

Anyway, I tested them last night by temporarily attaching them to an office chair. Played Elite and damn... that was great! Totally adding to immersion :)

Stuff you see in the picture:
  • 2 bass shakers
  • 600 Watt 6 channel amp from Sure Electronics (dirt cheap from eBay)
  • 500 Watt boost converter (12v to 36v, because the amp gives more oomph at 36v, also from Sure)
  • 675 Watt Power supply from a server (converted to regular power supply, got it for free from a dumped server)

Temporary attachment did not give the best experience but as a test it still worked great. Can't wait till I finish my hacked up ghetto carseat Elite gaming platform :)

The platform I'm building is just a bunch of wood I scavenged, an old carseat some unknown person left at my garage, a few wheels and the controllers I already had. Controllers being the CH Pro Rudder Pedals and HOTAS Warthog :)

Platform looks like crap at the moment but hey, who cares when you're in VR! For looks I'll probably paint it black sometime.

All in all the platform, while being a hack job, will have a great experience for a relatively low budget. I'm sure it can be done a lot cheaper if you opt for a less expensive HOTAS, cheaper rudder pedals and use an old amp from a garage sale or something like that.
