Thaank you ED for this vast galaxy representation

It is awesome, it is full of awe ;)

Even though most of it is procedurally generated it has become our real galaxy in my mind. Beagle Point is a real place, out there on the other side of the core. All those systems might as well be real to me, I have no better info than this game most of the time.

As a tool for self-learning it's excellent, I've never been so interested in astronomy as I have since buying ED.

this isnt something that will happen in our lifetime. being able to explore. the game engine is really awesome.

For us explorers this galaxy simulation is awesome... Yes we would like some new options. But this galaxy gives us a way to explore the galaxy that in real life won't happen in our lifetime... Thanks for the galaxy engine. it works awesome.

Have you tried space engine yet? Its better for your needs and was created by one person..

Also, its free..

This does beg the question mind you, what the hell are the developers at Frontier doing with their time?

edit:

So I just double checked.. Yes one person Vladimir Romanyuk created it. So one guy has more output than the 300 staff at FD or however many people are apparently working on the game.

Hmm

edit edit:

Come to think of it, I may apply for a Job at FD, it sounds like a right doss. [haha]

I mean look at this.. all space engine, created by one person..

When obsidian ant took a tour of Frontier did Braben hire 300 people pretending to work at the office?

What is going on here guys? If there has ever been more than five people working on ED at anyone time I'd be surprised. I'm baffled.

Meh... IMO it's really, really boring. FDev haven't captured the feel of the real galaxy. But glad you're happy with the simple stuff!

There's nothing in Elite's galaxy except endless repetition of a few basic bits. The galaxy FDev created is fictitious and lifeless and very, very limited. There's nothing that one would expect to see and discover. It's great that they came up with a math model to create a bazillion systems that are not in any way real aside for a few hand crafted systems. But the Elite galaxy - although big - fails to capture anything exciting for me. After jumping through 10 or so systems you've essentially seen it all. Might as well be limited to 100 systems versus the 400 billion or whatever they promote, like it was in the early beta and the pill / capsule. The only unique thing FDev have created is the blackhole lensing effect and neutron stars. No comets. No dying stars. No gas clouds. Nothing. Very boring indeed.

Frankly, I wished FDev spent time on making things more realistic in the galaxy rather than spending time futzing around with things like C&P and reworking RNGineers. That's been a waste of time.

Edit: the one simple test here is ask yourself how often do you actually stop in a system that you happen to be jumping through - stop because there's something exciting and interesting grabbing your attention? Not often I bet. Most players, like myself, simply honk, scoop and go right on through countless systems. After the first 10 or so stops they really offer nothing of interest and there's no real reason to stop aside from getting your name tagged as a "first discovered by...". Systems simply offer a new randomized mix of stars and colors. If FDev had captured the real galaxy feel players would be stopping all the time to see new life forms, amazing visuals, discoveries after discoveries, etc. But we simply honk, scoop, and FSD our way through.

Are you looking for the roadster of Elon ?

:p

I do love the ED galaxy. I really enjoyed that Discovery Scanner livestream about it too, but that Space Engine looks pretty impressive!

... and at least the Space Engine guy managed to get his Earth textures working properly! ;)

<snipped>

It looks great, but has Vladimir tried then to wrap it into a game, which must redraw at random instantly based on user input?
Has he tried to keep multiple players seeing same thing in the same place and time, or tried rendering other player's avatars(ships!) so that you can see them and interact with them?

The answer is no.

I'm not decrying Space Engine, but it has been designed for a complety different reason.

The ED galaxy serves very well.

I suspect if we ever get to explore different systems, who's to say they won't look very samey.

I'm quite sure FD's galaxy engine will improve, but it's GOT to work in the game.

And there are moments in ED that can really astound. The internet is awash with wonderful systems found be the players and shared for all.
I was able to land on a planet that went through a white dwarf star's jets. You could only land at a quiet time and had to wait once show was over.

I suspect these rarities are just that.

Most stars are fairly identical, with a small number of really large or quite small ones.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have extra features such a comets, but in the big scheme of it, in the ED galaxy, such small rocks are basically unimportant. Look at real efforts to get a probe to land on a comet a few years back, basically it got stuck and failed after a few hours.

Planetary traders would ignore these as being to small and tricky to bother with.

Much easier to land on something bigger with a stable surface and dig/drill for resources.

From point of view of a game, space engine is a bit like google maps, not like a race car simulator, which is more what you get with ED.
