Thank God for VR

Wait two weeks for a newsletter letter and ... nothing
just a cobbled together, can’t be bothered piece of nothing for the xth time in a row.
the only updates we have Seen in recorded memory are bug fixes, for which we are supposed to be grateful!

The dinosaurs and theme parks took over the forum and its like a ghost town anyway since there’s nothing to talk about!
reddit is a screen shot only situation and yet I’m STILL playing...

thank GOD for VR!

Frontier abandoned the game I love to make other games. They expect us to wait around like good Little commanders until they are ready to take more of our money. It’s the saddest thing that happened in my gaming life to be honest!

but damn If ED:VR isnt still the best entertainment experience out there!

i just don’t see how anyone playing flat screen would bother sticking around at this point?

I don’t care for fleet carriers that much and certainly don’t care for space legs. I want to see the ability to land on different planet types and see better use of latest advancements in GPU tech to see better performance. Happy to pay a second time for a lifetime expansion pass if there is improvements to VR. I only game in VR and have my system setup ONLY to play ED. Come on Frontier, throw us a bone... give us a sniff ow what’s coming later this year (apart from fleet carriers).

I really enjoy ED in VR but I tend to play on flatscreen much more, simply for convenience sake. VR is one of the things that has kept me playing, though.
As for ED being dead/a desert/abandoned I just don't see it myself. Most of the stations seem busier than ever to me - I regularly see hundreds of ships in the Traffic Report at most stations unless they are in some backwater and even then there's always a few ships listed. I remember when that definitely wasn't the case. Furthermore I'm regularly seeing about 10 CMDRs per hour or two (in Open) and that's hanging out on the fringes of the Bubble. Having picked up the game again about 14 months ago after a long break I've been sinking way too many hours into the game and I'm still just catching up with a lot of the content. I'm quite happy for FDev to take their time as I've still loads to do before there are any big game-changers implemented. My Inara ranking is in the mid-8000s - that's quite a lot of players ahead of me who must sink an awful lot of time into the game i.e. play regularly. There must be many more than that who don't have Inara accounts. Having been in since Beta I find that ED has matured quite a bit and that there are so many levels of players and so many groups and different play-styles now that the game-world has depth. And there must be a large number of players who are still exploring what the game has to offer. I think that FDev are right to give the game time to breathe and the players time to develop their CMDRs before shoving in new content. A lot of posters on these forums seems to think that they have seen everything, done everything and utterly exhausted the content that's already there, which seems somewhat incredible.
I could happily loose all the powerplay and missions from the game however - I've never liked any of that and only do missions when absolutely necessary. I tend to find that that sort of thing detracts, rather than adds, to the depth/immersion of the game world.

VR brought a "second wind" to my ED gameplay as well. Even so, I've grown bored again with ED in recent weeks, mainly thanks to Frontier removing CGs and IIs. I still do some exploring and mining in VR when I'm looking for more relaxing "experiential" gameplay, but I've pretty much "finished the game" otherwise.

My problem now is that VR has kinda ruined other games like Space Engineers for me, at least from the "flying spaceships" perspective. I've got that X-Rebirth VR game on my wishlist in case it goes on sale, as this might scratch some itches that ED no longer scratches. I also continue to enjoy 2D games like Overwatch and Stellaris.

Speaking of 2D games, I often play ED on flatscreen when I'm doing dedicated exploration, since 90% of that is using the FSS, which is just a floating flatscreen in VR. If I find something interested that I want to see, then I pop on the HMD to experience it properly.

VR was a true game changer, and Elite Dangerous was the system seller for me.

I also wish that FDev would put more work into it. Hell, I'd happy accept if they turned it into a service game and charge $5 a month or $50 a year - as long as we get something in return for it. At least that should pay for a small team of 2-3 creative authors to keep the story narratives alive (and integrate them better into the game).

This game has a very creative community, and I will never understand why they didn't make better use of that resource.

But I don't think they have abandoned the game yet. You can tell that they recently made a few efforts to reach out to the community. I think they do have something in the pipeline. And even if it's a fully independent Part 2 that will require me to start over again, I wouldn't mind as long as they put a little bit more life into this beautiful galaxy simulator. And keep supporting VR.

Otherwise, there may be an upcoming game that may hook me more than Elite Dangerous does. No, I'm not talking about SC here. I'm talking about Microsoft's new Flight Simulator. If that one will be half as good as it looks right now, and will get proper VR support, I will gladly trade my Federal Corvette in for a Cessna, Piper or 747.
