Happy dude here as well:
- I find I engage USS's a lot more, there could be materials there that I might need.
- There's a more context provided regarding missions. Aside from the NPC's giving them, they also show you what the results will be, and they have at least a little bit of narrative to them
- System states influence the economy a lot. You can find some tasty trades if you keep an eye out for certain system states
- The engineers themselves are a good addition. The RNG aspect; I can see why some people don't like it, but the alternative (just let me pay for it!) is worse. Just my opinion though
- The new AI? Well I like it. A lot. I'm no great combat pilot, but havent been killed by an NPC since the launch of 2.2 yet. Pick your targets wisely and know when to flee. I still can make a couple of million per hour bounty hunting (with the ALD bonus, that is). What I love is you really
gotta have situational awareness now, using asteroids to hide behind, use pip management extensively, try to lure enemies you engaged toward system security etc. All of those were good tactics before 2.2 as well, but now you are
forced to apply those tactics. I love that.
- Better graphics and better framerate. What's not to love.
- The space traffic control welcoming me to stations. It's little details like that I love.
Not saying certain things can't be improved upon. The materials engineers ask for.. meh.. why not throw in some missions that make sense in the context of that particular engineer and his/her alignment as well?
But overall, the best thing about this patch is that it finallly made the universe a bit more alive. My biggest gripe so far with Elite was that there actually is a lot to do, but the universe felt so static and lifeless. Now, the things I do have context, meaning. Stations communicate with you, factions acknowledge your existence.
It's by no means perfect or complete, but to me, this is by far the best major patch to date.
Now pretty please, with sugar on top, throw the explorers a bone in the next one. I'm not a die hard explorer. I only travel to the Rift now and then, but it deserves some more love. Comets, more dangerous black holes (accretion discs!) and whatever else those guys that know a lot more about exploration then I do ask for. Give it to them
