Currently I have no choice but to play in Solo on my PS4 (it's complicated). Yet I still feel like I'm part of a "living galaxy" when I play ED, because the BGS is shared across modes and platforms. When I say "BGS", I'm talking the bigger, broader picture. I'm not actively working to promote a faction or power, I'm just doing my thing.
So what am I talking about? Seeing that a certain CMDR has been mapping in the same area I'm exploring, for example. While I know I'll never encounter him in Solo, it's still a "sign of life" that makes everything feel more "real" than if I were exploring ED in a true single-player mode. I say "mapping", because I know that's a very recent addition, so "mapped by" tags are like fresh footprints (MHW FTW). It also adds to the sense of accomplishment when I discover something in an area that's already been picked over by other players.
Another example is seeing the traffic report at the station I'm operating out of. I'm currently in a very obscure, rarely visited part of the Bubble, but that's what makes it all the more cool when I see that there are a few other CMDRs out here with me! That was one of my favorite things when I was operating out of the Lagoon nebula, seeing just how much traffic passes through such a remote destination.
And then there are other things like the Codex, Squadrons (still looking for an active exploration squadron on PS4), and even the bounty reports showing "who's been naughty" in the sector of space I'm currently calling home.
These are small things, I know, but it all helps to make my Solo experience a little less solitary, and I'm thankful Frontier made the game with this in mind
