thank you, yes you

So after a few days of screwing around with the DK2 (and upgrading my video card, which should be easier than it was) I finally sat down tonight to a proper VR experience.

I read a bit beforehand and applied most of the tweaks mentioned on this forum.

The end result? A really amazing experience. You guys rock. Thank you for all the help and suggestions.

Now if you pardon me I'm going back to schlepping crap around the galaxy in a Type 6. Bonzai!

The type 6 is an eye opener for sure.
You will have loads more fun doing combat in a vulture or even viper though. Fighting by keeping your enemy tracked with the rift is so intuitive and fun!

The Lakon cockpit is incredible with the Rift since it's so far forward and totally domed with glass. Same for the Asp cockpit. All of the smaller ships' cockpits were impressive but the glass ones are just so awesome it blew me away.

It is very nice the first time indeed but i actually like the smaller cockpits from time to time. The viper gives you a nice "i sit in a fighter cockpit" feeling. The cobra is nice because you sit on the site instead of the center. I really like all of them. I like the differences - differences you wouldn't even notice much when playing with a regular display.

Add another to the list of converts, I am still running my Rift off of my old machine, that was no slouch, but I have a new build ready to go just waiting for my CPU fan. Even with the Judder on my old machine, and after extensive tweaking (which is really a waste of time since I have my new machine almost ready) I love the VR. Over the weekend I went back to my flat screen monitor and it just doesn't do it for me anymore. My favorite cockpit so far is the Type 7, very open a lot of glass and you really get a feel for the size of the ship. I will chime back in once I get my I7 5820 6 core, 16gb of DDR4 ram, SSD drive, NVidia 980 GTX 4gb machine up and running. Very excited.
I think VR makes me feel like I actually own my ships, almost like there is in the game and the real world. With just flat a flat screen it's more like I am sitting in my house flying a simulator, kind of like watching a football game on TV as opposed to going to the stadium and seeing it. It's just not the same.

This. All the time, this. ^^

I bet, if you were able to explain to someone who is half way intelligent, half way naive, like a kid in that sweet spot where they can still believe in ghosts but not be fooled by santa around age 8, that if you told them that by putting on the oculus rift, you are taking part in a top secret operation to control a robot inside a real ship in real space, where you are able to look through cameras in his head, he would believe it.

I teach four year olds for a living and I think I understand why we are all here...
Kids don't need anything but their imagination to transport themselves into a created world. The older you get, the harder this gets. I remember playing ELite on the Amiga back as a kid and being mesmerised by flying my ship through the Galaxy.
The Rift turns me back into that kid and it's awesome because it fills in the gaps that my grown up imagination lacks.

We get to be kids again!

Wait really ? :)

Best cockpit experiences in the rift for me, so far, are:

1. Eagle
2. Clipper

Best bridge in the game with the DK2 is tied with the Python and Lakon 9.

But the Razzies have to go to the Clipper and Anaconda. What a waste of space. They could have done so much more. Like added ready rooms, more equipment consoles or something to make those bridges feel like big ship bridges.

You guys make me feel so poor, I just scratched enough money together to buy a type 7.

Yes, and thanks. Got it this weekend. Best "view" of all the ships I have piloted so far. The Eagle is a killer view for a different reason. I like being able to almost look behind my ship in it.

I too got mine last weekend. on a screen (it may be better on 3 of them with track IR) but on a single screen without tracking the difference in ships is just a slightly different hud, withmore/less armour and faster/slower speeds.

but in VR imo you get to truly feel the difference in the ships, and the whole size of everything makes sense.

go back to the eagle after a few hrs in the clipper or asp, or any of the haulers and if you are anything like me you will feel a little clostrophic at 1st. No other gaming device is capable of that that i have seen.

I've owned pretty much everything up to and including a Python (ya, even a Clipper) and I have to go with the Asp as the best cockpit. That view looking down, as you're flying over a star or a planet, makes you feel like you're in a technological bubble just zipping through space. Love the look of the thrusters as you manoevre too.

Totally agree. All the lakon ships are awesome, but the Asp holds a special place in my heart. The T9 has an amazing view too. The view is what really kept me in the T9. Im in an Anaconda now, and as much as i love this ship, the view is nothing to write home about. Im keeping it though, i love batting things around with the long nose.

Back on topic though. Totally agree with flatulus. The only reason ED is working as well as it is for me is because of the forum gurus.
