Thank you

I started to play Elite back in 87 or 88, on an MSX Computer. Back then, a local magazine reviewed it as "a game for a lifetime" - and that what it felt like for the 13 years old me back then. It was on a league of its own, specially compared to other MSX games. The feeling of being able to dock the station, to escape a Thargoid encounter or even some close encounter with a Wolf MK II, for me there was nothing like that on other games back then.

For some reason, I could not get much into Frontier: Elite II on the Amiga, I am not sure why. Perhaps the wireframed-style graphics had more appeal than the solid ones for me. But Elite always stayed as one of my favorite games... so I was delighted when heard about the Kickstart.

So now, when after three years playing I finally got my long sought after Imperial Cutter, I'd like to thank David Braben and the Frontier team for this amazing game. It's not perfect, and I specially long for being able to play without having to resort to 3rd party tools (and of course, for the long-dreamed Atmospheric Landings : ) ), but it's unique. Just roving around planets and finding materials, nice landscapes or listening to the sounds is soothing and enjoyable for me. I like roleplaying salvaging escape pods and getting into Distress Calls for help, and enjoy finding odd planets - that I hope one day I´ll be able to further explore.

So thank you!

You have a long, rich history with the game so I appreciate your perspective. My history is about 6 mos but I feel pretty much the same way about its current state. Thankful.

I started on my mates BBC Micro B, quite some time ago. We used to take turns. Completely blew my 13 year old brain.

I think it was the scope of the game, and also want it could become. ED now is more than we imagined, and I am thoroughly enjoying it.

So, yep I think I share a lot of your sentiment, OP. Where will it be in another 30 years? If I'm still around I'll still be playing.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Nice thread, OP. :)

I did not start with Elite, but did play Elite II. It was quite an experience!

Yes, Elite Dangerous ins't perfect, but then again nothing is. It's a very enjoyable game and one that I keep coming back to again and again. We may not all agree with the design or direction its taken, but it's truly something special nonetheless.

Ah, memory lane. Great games that became part of us. Here's the list of ALL of them except ED. Enjoy.

Cool to see an oasis of calm and joy joy feelings thread ^

This is my first frontier game period...I never had nice things when I was a kid, so my only experience with the original elite was watching friends play it on their toys. Ive always loved games with spaceships...I have very fond memories of freelancer on one the best modded servers in europe...I was actually a mod there fer a year haha

Thing with me is that while I do have a real passion fer this genre of games, my first love was always fer pure deathmatch type games ergo why Id never strayed onto frontiers path in the past.

At the grand age of 46, Ive never been as addicted to a game than at any other time in my life and in that time, I can count 8 years in eve, 6 years in bsgo but only two here so far and herein lies my personal little paradox game. Its the first game Ive played in a long time that isnt pvp based so it doesnt make sense why I would love this game so much.

And yet I do nonetheless. I might be a bit sharp and I dont pull punches...I say what I think and couldnt care less who likes it or not...my infraction history is what I would term as ¨impressive¨

And yet still...like you OP...Im thankful this game is here...makes real life that little more tolerable when theres something to look forward to...so long as yer able to take the rough with the smooth, the rest is gravy ^

Rode the Wing Commander wagon into its grave. Hopped onto Descent Freespace 1 and 2, which killed space sims for me for a decade (in a 'how the smell do you top that!?' sense). Found ED on a chance Steam search and I think I've now put more hours into it than every other space sim combined. Is it perfect? Of course not, perfection is a myth. What it is is the closest I've ever come to piloting my own space fighter. Been waiting a lifetime for that experience.

Short version: Thanks FD! You do way more right than you do wrong!

Another satisfied customer!

The forums wouldn't be as 'lively' if there wasn't a lot of passion for what the devs have done. Everyone has a stake in the game...and even through the teeth gnashing and pitchforking, I do believe everyone believes they are trying to help create a better game!

I heartily concur with the sentiment of this thread! I started with the original Elite (on the Spectrum), moved up to Elite II and First Encounters (where I also managed to help the Thargoids!), and I have now been in the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy for about 3 1/2 years so far (with no signs of going stale).

Ying and yang...balance...one cannot exist without the other...we would have chaos otherwise ^

What is the biggest negative about the Elite games? Far more than any other 'I want something' thread ever posted on the Forum?

WAITING 17 years for 'Elite IV" from the release or Frontier: First Encounters in April of 1995 to the Elite Dangerous Kickstarter in Nov 2012. I guess one part of that was getting the computer technology to allow the vision of Mr. Braben and associates. I was age 34 playing my first Elite game on the Commodore 64 in 1985. I'm thrilled to be around to enjoy ED! Hurry up with the atmospheric planet landings. The age clock is ticking over here! :)

Yep, my thanks as well. I'm still enjoying new experiences 3 years in, now. Just last night, appreciating my horrible aim while engaging some Thargoid Scouts for the first time.

And there have been some welcome steps forward in the latest patches.

Nice thanks thread. I started on FFE , got the thargoid scout, then backtracked to FE2, then wondered why the Elite franchise disappeared so X:btf, X2 and X3: reunion were the "substitutes" until FS2004 and FSX until two years ago when I started up ED. Amazing galactic interstellar sim and game. A better "Star Trek" game of sim trekking than the Star Trek label games themselves tbh. ED's iCourier and iClipper were disappointments so I had to go with the cutter like flying similar to a boeing heavy again from PMDG+FSX. Finally the chieftan feels and survives more like the iCourier/Explorer of FFE & FE2 which were my favorites to fly in those games.
