I've decided to go with the Asp and build it for Combat/trading:

My original build assumed 10 million:

But taking into account peoples comments I've been grinding higher to cover better combat upgrades (B - heavier but better than C/D) and more insurance....
I've also stuck with a 5B shield which does mean less cargo than a pure trader with a 3A (and slightly less than my Lakon 6) but its a MUCH better shield.
I've also switched to gimballed weapons & gone for 4 small Multi & 2 medium burst? lasers
I've switched from 1 ECM to 2 passive Point Defences.
I've lost the discovery scanner for extra cargo space

The result is a 96t cargo capacity (only 4 less than my Lakon) with B component thrusters,shields,drive etc & better weapons.

Obviously this is not using the Asp as "an explorer" and the heavier B components drop my range...but they can be upgraded later.
Will this build handle combat (not PvP) & trading well enough? or would you guys change anything e.g. weapon choice!

14million cost 700k rebuy (although will try and get Alioth permit to save some of that)
Aiming for minimum of 18 million to cover rebuy x5 500k trading + any extra from Alioth discount

Dump the class 5 shield, put in another Cargo compartment, and get an A3 shield generator instead. Those will be ample enough for PvE and you'll gain a lot of room for hauling should you need it.

I am maybe a bit nervous about my combat inexperience ;)
Using Coriolis.io
*B5 shield + x1 A grade booster (I used B grade but the price increase is small) = 237 MJ shield
*A3 shield + x1 A grade booster = 163 MJ shield
So a the B5 is 45% better than the A3.... I've no clue whether that's "noticeable" in PvE though

Or I could dump one of the 2 point defence and run x2 A grade boosters for a 190MJ and get the 120 Cargo space you recommend?
(If you run just 1 anti-missile system is Chaff/ECM better than a solitary PD?)

I never go thru "B", always from "C" to "A".
I really don't need extra-resistance of "B" on a little combat vessel such as an Asp which need some agility.

When going from "C" to "A", my priorities are :

> Reactor when needed
> Power distributor
> FSD, Propulsors and Shield (depend your priorities)

I would use two weapons configurations : 1) 2 Pulse for shield; 2) 2 Pulse + All cannons when shield are down.

Same price, lighter (so faster, nimbler and with better range).

I've found 4xM cannon turrets on the small hard points to be very effective as they will still be firing on the target even outside the frontal arc but you do need to be careful as they continue to fire once started so releasing the fire button won't work!

An alternative to ED shipyard is Coriolis and it has a power calculator that's really handy for setting module priority I've edited one of my builds to add your 5B FSD and thrusters, although I'd stick with 5D myself as you don't get much performance improvements for over 1.5 mil.

Always fit the best Power distributor you can as it's directly powering the weps, engines and shields as long as the power plant has enough power to supply it.

Another version of my Asp with a 5A FSD and minimal power management, must admit I'm tempted to buy a 5A FSD that jump range is impressive!
