Thanks to David Braben and the Devs

Back in 1984ish when Elite was first released, I was growing up in a housing scheme. Very few folk there could afford a computer. A mate's dad got a hold of a C64 eventually, probably off the back of a lorry, and a copy of Elite was duly purchased. My friends and I tended to get our computing fix at night so we could use the big colour telly. My mate had a joystick, a horrifically stiff microswitch job that gave you blisters after 10 mins. I never got very far with the game; couldn't get the time to play, can't even remember if I had my own save.

Anyway today, some 30 odd years later, I finally hit Elite in combat.

Thanks for bringing back the thrills of those dimly remembered all nighters.

+1 for stolen C64 Greatness. When you owned a C64, you invariably stole something. If it wasn't the rig, it was pirate copies of your friends games.

Playing elite in 1984 probably cost me a degree but I did get elite, in hindsight I would have made a crap programmer. This was done on a disc drive BBC B, I can't remember when the c64 version came out but I don't think it was 1984. My mate had it on c64 but it had digital joystick and tribbles or similar, the BBC version was purer and in some ways better.

those hazy days of mid 80s gaming is missed by myself...it was more magical back then...because it was all new...and not every one had one......my old man was a bus driver then a bricky lol.....eventually got me a zx spectrum on one of my bdays...also had a old vic 20...that we found gathering dust in our school broom cupboard heh...these days we know what to expect from gaming....not the same as when it was all a new concept.

well done on elite bud

I grew up on a council estate in the North West of England and got a Spectrum for Christmas when I was 12. My mum was working part time as a cleaner and my dad was on the markets; they bought mine from WH Smiths of all places and it was only about 10 years later that I can say I had a proper adult grasp of just how hard it was for them to afford it.

I did manage Elite in the original game but I know I'm going to have a bit of a moment when I do it in this version too. Congrats OP, I know those feels.

Yeah, I'm not totally certain of the year. Funnily enough, I also failed to get a CS degree. For me it was the rock 'n' roll circus that kept me out of classes. Got a job in a studio eventually which shut down after 4 years as computers took over and folk made music in their bedrooms. Moved sideways into live sound, and now been mixing bands for 25 years. Kinda gone full circle as I'm trying to learn to code again as a hobby.
