Thargoid Base - Shedding Skin or Diseased?

I was hunting for the 3 Unknowns wanted by Neville Horizons in Kaushpoos and noticed for the first time the outer wall of the Thargoid base in Pleiades Sector IR-W D1-55 system appears to be shedding skin?

Then, I shone the light on one of the outside structures and it looks like it's caught some disease?

I have been to this base at night but don't remember noticing these, and the location of the entire base appears to have moved like some engineers' bases - e.g., Turner Inc.

I've been of the mind that these "bases" are where the artichoke ships "grow", and once the ship has detached, these things slowly shrivel up and die (and/or are eaten by Scavengers).

Of course, these could also be "leftovers" from the previous conflict that was resolved by means of biological weapons, and these are just suffering the results thereof - and might be the cause of their "Return" - they're peeved we gave them STD's (that's Specifically Transmitted Diseases, wash your mind out with soap!).
