Thargoid Bases: Respect where it’s due.

After 1000+ of gameplay I finally decided to head over to the Thargoid bases and I must say FD, it’s beautifully done. Driving up to the site in VR was very atmospheric, and more than a little disquieting.

Also, embedding information and clues in sound files is a very cool and original approach.

More of this please. :)

P.S. Incidentally, for any role-playing groups out there who might be interested in this stuff, I made a free Max Msp patch a number of years ago that allows you to embed images in this way (link under vid - requires the Max 5 run-time).

Although it might be cool to embed information and clues in soundfiles, I strongly believe that we should not have to use out-of-game tools to get crucial in-game information. We should have the tools to solve this stuff in the game.

It's a fair point, but if they did happen to include a spectral analysis module it would render the whole endeavor a bit pointless. Having to think outside of the box in order to investigate its content is one of the more interesting things that Elite has done.

I take your point and normally I’d agree (on the subject eddb etc), but in this case I find it quite imaginative and refreshing.

Perhaps you could have a Thargoid base somewhere that has a machine that actually decodes these files (namely, a huge alien spectrogram :)).

While it is cool, it’s the kind of thing that makes this game feel like it’s not made for me. I do like when I see people solving these things though. Major props.

Yes, I suppose it is a bit obscure for those who aren’t interested in this kind of thing. These audio files have a pretty clear sonic signature, but that isn’t obvious to those who haven’t heard them before. The more that I think about it, the more I find myself sympathising with Iskariot’s view that there should be a means of decoding them in-game, but I also agree with Chorda that a simple module would be a bit dull. I think its a good example of FD thinking "outside the box" though. The general art design of the Thargoid sites is great though.

Speaking as someone who's been decoding those sites each week this year for the Eagle Eye story I'll be happy once we can decode them in game, though hopefully someone else is doing it this week ;)

What software do you use? Audacity? Sonic Visualiser?

Agreed, after many hours of playtime I decided to go for the Thargoid Star Map a few days ago. Really enjoyed the journey and atmosphere! Some impressions:

Absolutely spot on and with the AspX (et al.) not making use of its utility slots, there's ample opportunity for FD to create analytical modules which would complement a true explorer build. :)

There should be a secondary roll out of the discovery in game for the other 99% of players.
Maybe FD should just pay Obsidian Ant to make in game videos and be done with it.

I just wish we could see the green spots from orbital cruise. They're big enough to identify. Maybe with chapter 4 and the exploration improvements? Please?

I do agree that it is interesting, but the problem is that for many players this content is not accessible.

Well, yes, but if we had a whole bunch of analysis tools, then that'd be less of an issue.

It's asking a LOT to add an entire "Science suite" into the game though, but it would be amazingly cool.

One thing that might be really nice though, is just a basic notepad type thing, for say, trying to note down stuff like the eagle eye messages.

The problem with this "content" is it's just too obscure to make me bother with it. looks lovely mind but why can't we have random stuff out in the black something to stop us explorers going bonkers in the deep black.

Hum... you can though, I can spot thargoid sites from super cruise when closing in on a planet.

Recently went to a few sites and they only became visible to me when I entered glide; then they suddenly popped up in all their fluorescent glory. But in supercruise, nothing.

Huh, weird, I've definately seen it in the past.

Haven't been in a while, possible that the planet updates changed it, it's been that long since I went.

Assume you have everything on ultra?
