We may have incorrectly assumed the Thargoid Devices were hostile to Guardian items due to Ram Tah's account of Guardian history from translating ancient sites, but what if the Unclassified Relic(s) show something important was missing?
When commanders first entered Thargoid Sites and learned to activate the device, the Scavengers, the site itself, and the Thargoids didn't become hostile when the map appeared; the Thargoids attacked stations after Galnet announced the maps were being analyzed to see if there was a way of understanding the Thargoids, and possibly their language.
This leads to a few thoughts: 1) The Thargoids already understand human language, to an extent, and attacked us because we were seen as preparing to "attack" their their hiveships again. (By entering with the correct items, pilots can enter structures - otherwise, they're locked out. With the items, we're seen as "friendly", unless we insert Guardian items in a certain way. 2)Guardian items may be rejected by Devices because they lack something, not because of an ancient enemy's technology by itself. (Much like data objects and transmission signals, there could be a form of sort/verification sub-indicator stating the signl strength or integrity of a broadcast or receipt. If one looks at the Relic as a storage device (Tah said it was a power source/computer/key), it may be missing a closing address, which would lead to the violent response of the Device, the shrunken, partly-melted look of the Unclassified Relic, and the hostile actions of the Scavengers.
This leads to 3)The Thargoids understand (a type of) human language, and have been following Galnet through human system/relay beacons, the same ones the Winking Cat hacked. (This isn't to say the Cat is a Thargoid, it means the 'goids may understand Morse Code! The beacons give off a morse broadcast, just as today's international bouys do at sea, and some satellites "talk" as well. We humans may have been pwned by extraterrestrials with their own Powerbook, and the Unclassified relic could be a badly-formatted flash drive we jammed into it.)
Since the Device acts as a map under "normal" conditions, an "ideal" (Thargoid Device friendly) Relic wouldn't alert the scavengers, and pilots could theoretically exit without alerting the Thargoids until the next Vox Galactica or Galnet expose. Just saying...
