Guide / Tutorial Thargoid EVAC missions: how to avoid Schytes, Glaives & fines

With the Thargoid attack "planned" for Sol, the interest in EVAC missions is high and I have read several posts from players having issues with the mechanics or getting stuck due to fines or worse, below some info and advices.

If you lose passengers during an evacuation mission, due to a Scythe's Hatch Breaker you will receive a fine, this is normal and has always happened.
I'm not arguing whether it makes sense or not, but that's how it is

Let's see how to avoid it and if we don't succeed, how to recover...

to avoid Thargoid hatch breaker and FSD reboot missiles,
Equip ECM and DO NOT put on firegroups, instead bind to a key so,
1. you do not have to deploy hardpoint to use ECM, and do not need to retract them to high wake out, plus you still be able to use while charging FSD
2. keybinding avoid to waste ECM charge, they will be always used in succession on key press, and avoid mistake like binding to same firegroup that will waste-fire all ECM at the same time
3. if you are using a size 5 FSD and do not need SCO, old but good Size 5 FSDv1 (double engineered with Increase Range + Fast Boot) have a reboot of 2 second instead of 10 in case of ECM fail and FSD reboot missile hit you.

You can use a single ECM but two is safer, sometime you have 2x Scythe or Scythe and Glaive mix on your tail.

You can succeed without ECM, Scythes deploy their hatch breaker limpet only if shield are down, if your ship speed allow to evade (500+ speed) or you can destroy Scythes without loosing shield, you can socket FSD reboot missiles, of course not applicable to shieldless setups.

Last option is the old and good silent running and/or heat sink, stay cold, they cannot lock on you, just remember to SR asap, if Glaive get lock on you, SR/HS afterwards is useless, they will keep the lock.

Point Defence is ineffective against goid missiles, while a PD will shoot at them, it deals zero damage.

plenty of options, rest is personal taste.

Fines and Bounty
Pay fine in a station owned by faction that bestow it on you.
To use Interstellar Faction, the station must not be owend by the faction that bestow bounty on you.
Click on this INARA link, i put filters to find nearest interstellar faction to pay bounty and fines, you have to modify your reference system and Faction Name NOT owned by, accordingly.
If you have problem to pay your fines or you payed and still in anonymous state, relog at station, this is an old bug never fixed.

Notoriety
if you have notoriety to purge and do not want to wait, just switch to a cheap small ship with a single weapon, to lower rebuy cost.
Go to a station, shoot at it, get blow up, you will respawn to nearest prison with notoriety zeroed, and you are "fine" to go.
You still have to pay the bounty but clear the notoriety, this happen because bounty is bound to the ship while notoriety to the pilot.
P.S. I'm old and forgetful but I think there's still the bounty to pay, I don't remember for sure. Verified, is correct.

notes,
  • You can "avoid and wake out" or "fight", Scythe and Glaive can be handled even on a rescue ship, just need to pick the right ship setup, as pure "EVAC" or a "CSAR" combat capable ship, old Phyton is good in both role, for pure EVAC there is plenty of choice.
  • There is more options like using Silent Running and HS, easier on cold ship like a DBS or Dolphin as example
  • I wanted to keep this guide concise and generic, but if you are interested it can be extended with special cases.
  • don't combat relog!
Have fun!

Edit updates,
verified bounty/notoriety reset
added info about shield mechanics and hatch breakers
added info about point defence

Great stuff.

To add:
  • Heatsinks will help as well, reducing your heat signature to the thargoids.
  • Faster boost speeds will help as well, to run away faster.

Furthermore, some niche setup can completly avoid use of ECM using Silent Running and HS to sustain boost, easy mode on a Dolphin as example.

I didn't wrote it's a guide applicable to all ships but there are some niche options, good point i will put a note , thank you.

If you swap ships while you have a bounty the ship you swapped from will still have a bounty on it which you will need to pay off to clean the ship otherwise it might get impounded if you get caught being naughty on foot.

There was a thread over in Odyssey discussions where I think someone who had managed to get several ships bountied had problems when they were impounded and the accumulated bounties needed to be paid.

you still have to pay the bounty but notoriety will be zeroed, is a way to solve notoriety issue not the bounty.... then using IF for fix later one.
Bounty is tied to the ship, but notoriety isn't.

as wrote, "I'm old and forgetful but I think there's still the bounty to pay"

notoriety "on foot" had few issue, there are old posts about it, just avoid to mix the issue because it can generate misunderstanding.

What is ECM?

Welcome to the defense of Sol, commander o7

FDev missed a trick to introduce AX PD turrets which would actually be of some value.
and some players keep PD in they AX build, even if useless, sometime FDevs are subtle Evils... PD fire to goid missile but deliver zero damage, so decive players in thinking they will work.
