Thargoid hunting question.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to start hunting Thargoids before the changes take place. I'm all set with the Chieftain meta build, understand choosing non-human 5 or 4 or whatever you are after for threat. Questions below.

1. How do you know what system currently has Thargoids in it that you can enter? I am using the Galaxy map, see the red Thargoid icons, go there and am instantly interdicted, attacked, the Nav Beacon is compromised. In the video tutorials I see people in systems with regular Nav Beacons and travel around freely that have Thargoids in them. How do you find those systems?

2. The Chieftain gets about 30LY upgraded with no Fuel Scoop. Where can you park your FC? Or are there stations in the Thargoid systems you can repair at? Not sure how to travel to them when the FC is not allowed in any Thargoid active systems. Makes sense, just not sure what the tactic is to get to and from these systems with the limited travel Chieftain.

Just need a point in the right direction so I can start hunting.

Thanks for the help.

You have two options:

1. Solo "non-aggressive" Thargoid fight then head to Asterope and chose Non-Human Signal Source (NHSS). You can repair at Copernicus Observatory Station 83ls away.

2. Join AXI PG or in Open at one of the AXI Defense Targets (see at AXI Discord Server). You will always find other CMDRs to hunt with

With the help of another Commander, a closer way to get a Cyclops reliably is simply to drop to normal flight within a Control system, the ones shown with green while viewing the Galaxy map in Thargoid War mode. The main reason for bringing a friend is to set up the area such that the Cyclops is yours and any Scouts get distracted and leave, although while learning it can be useful also to return to the same Cyclops.

I have done this a few times for others before; it works like this:
  • Friend drops to normal flight, which I do after just a few seconds of Supercruise away from the arrival star.
  • Friend awaits a Cyclops then boosts away from its Frame Shift Anomaly. A good distance is just after it falls from sensors, around 15–20 km, still visible from afar.
  • You join via nav-lock, and your friend uses a Beam laser to point you towards the Cyclops.
  • Friend goes cold, below 20% heat, ideally around 15%. Some distance maintenance is needed as the duel moves around. Camera suite with full zoom is great for observing!
In that scenario all incoming Scouts will appear around your friend, leaving you alone with the Cyclops, yet they are also unable to find anyone due to lack of heat. They arrive and leave in pairs without any attention needed, although it is no problem to destroy them as long as you do not become too separated!

The fastest way to bypass any Hyperspace problems is just exit and continue, which will be instant if you were not in danger prior to the jump attempt, although notably these can also provide the Cyclops you seek. If you need to wait safely while in a Control system, you can drop to normal flight then charge a low wake but remain at zero speed without engaging it—nothing will arrive!

Note that the "Chieftain meta build" is not necessarily "the meta" for war activities. On the one hand, it is relatively low-threshold since it requires a minimum of Guardian grind (3 bloops). On the other hand, it is high-threshold because Gauss are the most difficult weapons to use and the ammo supply is super low.

The current "meta" for AXCZs is probably more like a Krait with either 4 Modshards or a mix of modshards and AXMCs. Or a Conda with 6 shards; it started out as a meme build but they raze through a CZ like a hot knife through margarine. A so-called "meta chieftain" has become a rather rare sight in CZs.

(Personally, I prefer a FAS because the Krait is just too sluggish for my liking, but that ain't meta either, nobody flies a FAS.)

From the galaxy map, one option is to open the Thargoid War from the left pane, showing most active Alert, Invasion and Control systems plus the Titan systems all of which you can click on. If you are in open or AXI you're more likely to find other CMDR's there to either wing with or just play alongside. Any success on your part is more likely to help defeat Thargoid control

The red THargoid icons I guess are either invasion systems or Titan systems. You might want to avoid Titan systems as it's most likely they will interdict you in those systems rather than you going to them

If you're not interested in company, any system in those states (found via left pane Pilot's Federation then state, and filtering on the Thargoid states) will lead to Thargoid encounters

Indeed CMDR, 4 CMDRs in Krait MK2 with 4 ModShards (I think quite common these days) will burn through a CZ including the last twin Hydras.
