Thargoid invasion - implications for explorers and other non-combatants?

I suppose I should have known about this update and what in entailed before I set off but I somehow missed it!

Anyhow I'm nearly at Beagle and not likely to get back to the bubble for quite some while, so I have questions:

  1. When 2.4 drops can I expect to be interdicted by Thargoids waaaaaay out here near Beagle, in other words what is the theatre of battle for the Thargoid action?
  2. Will there even be a bubble to come back to?
  3. If there is can I expect to get my behind handed to me by a blockade of Thargoids as soon as I get near?
  4. Will Colonia be safe?
  5. Will my major assets stored in the core systems be safe?
  6. When I get back, hopefully the war will still be going and I will be able to join in. Will my absence have deprived me of access to any special anti-Thargoid weapons/equipment or will I be able to purchase this stuff when I do get back?
  7. Will my Cat have died or will my neighbours in the Haxel Port condo's realised I went away and have been feeding it? (I'm sure I dropped them a note :S)

I think that pretty much all falls under the realm of wait and see, they specifically aren't telling us any of that. Yet, anyway.

My guesses though.

1/ Yes, actually, there was slight suggestion that Thargoids will be all over the place, perhaps not quite that far but still...
2/ Probably yes, while burning everything down might sound fun on paper when all there is left is ash that won't be very fun for anyone. What would new players have to do and what happens to everyone else out exploring (like you) and so on.
3/ I don't think it will work quite like that somehow. Perhaps increased interdiction and rate of aggression.
4/ Maybe to start with but I suspect not, see 1.
5/ I imagine so, not doing this would annoy so many people so much I can't see FD messing with this too much. Perhaps some inconvenience of access or thinks get destroyed and you have to reclaim them elsewhere perhaps.
6/ I suspect things will still be carrying on and that access to stuff will be no less than what we are all experiencing once 2.4 initial drops. In fact you might have easier access to things after everyone inevitably complains it is to hard to acquire stuff. For instance I suspect corrosion resistant cargo racks will become more easily accessible at some point.
7/ Not if you put it in to suspend animation and/or topped up the feeder before you left. Probably not to be honest, with the break down of modern community who even knows their neighbours any more - its a sad state of affairs.

My guess, or rather a hope would be that the Thargoid encounters with non-combat ships might be similar to what they were till now. Pull over, let your ship to be shut down and scanned, part ways peacefully. And only if you have some profound anti-Thargoid equipment on board (see trailer) and are aggressive, the fighting will occur.

Although I would completely understand if we were KOS for the bugs, I would really hate that. One would believe they'd be above that kind of things. Otherwise they'd be just like humans only with more legs, which is kinda boring from the narrative perspective and brings them down to our level of savagery.

No one expects the Thargoid Interdiction!

Aahahaha, that brings back memories...

My expectation is that the Thargoid operations will be limited to the bubble and some previously locked regions, so that explorers that just want to go out there can still do it. I'd love a dangerous galaxy but I'd prefer if not every danger is Thargoid related.

I just dont envisage any real implications...and even if there are, Im unarmed. Not a single weapon on my ship and a weak sheild fer bumpy landings. Too far out to make it back before 2.4 so all I can do is wait and see...same as everyone else. I did hear a rumour that it would be optional content but time will tell...either way I not even remotely concerned about any supposed implications. I have enough fer 20 rebuys on my t9 and theres not a whole lot of use fer money out here so losing it wont really make much difference ^

1. Unlikely imo. Though in 1.0 you could get interdicted out there iirc.
2. Can you imagine the whining on here if it were extinguished overnight?
3. You would hear about it will before you get back, unless you are doing the haul before this Thursday?
4. Thats everyone's guess. Afaik a dev also said something to the effect of it will be fine.
5. Can you imagine the whining?
6. Not going to sell many copies to the consolers if its over and done with in a jiffy.
7. Depends if its like the cat in Aliens.

I've been out for about a year & I'm nowhere near any kind of 'content'. I like to plan ahead & don't enjoy unpredictable events like magic AI so being this far out is my solution. Hopefully I've mitigated as much risk as I can.

Unless Frontier are planning to re-imagine the Thargoids, then IIRC we're dealing with a territorial race of insectoids that are mostly interested in resources.

So I suspect if you're not stomping around their garden whilst lugging around pieces of their lawnmower that was coincidentally just been dismantled and aren't carrying resources they particularly want, then they'll give you a curious poke to see what you're about and then sod off again.

Providing you don't go all "HOW DARE YOU INVADE MY BOB GIVEN RIGHTS TO FLY WHERE I PLEASE! PEWPEWPEWPEWPEW!" on them like some Pro-Hudson extreme right space cadet.

Thus far, FD have resisted the temptation to destroy their players for no reason every time they leave dock. I imagine that will continue.

Hopefully, for those that want to face off to the thargoids (or have something they want, "tasty alien relics" anyone?) they will be challenging opponents, but for those less aggressively inclined they will show another side to their nature. :D

You know their's a system called Bob? ;) (stumbled across it today).

Your risk will come when you return to claim your cartographic collection. A year out? I can only imagine the value! When the day comes you are approaching dock, feel free to friend up and I can provide an escort (Private group will be safest) if you like. Buddy of mine did that ages ago and it was awesome.

I sold the data I had accumulated so far in the latest beta & it was just under 300k, at the time I was not far from Beagle point (in the beta I was involuntarily magically transported back to the bubble), by the time I actually dock anywhere I would guess it'll be around half a bil.

I'm already plenty rich & explorer Elite so all I would lose would be the first discovered tags, but yes, getting back in to the bubble is naturally a concern and the many unknowns of 2.4 don't help that. However unlike most explorers (although not all) I'm not flying a paper thin long jumper, I'm in a fully armed & armoured Corvette.

I don't want to get into a fight, but if it comes to me I will not go gentle into that good night ;)

Some background :) Thank you for your kind offer though ;)

I believe you will be quite fine. Frontier has ostensibly made thargoid related content, optional. It's so optional, in fact, that if one did not read Galnet (occasionally) or visit some of the systems near Maia, folks may not even know thargoids exist.

There will be no burning down of the bubble, no crazy insta-zapping of explorers 20k+ ly out. In fact, you are likely to be able to remain completely oblivious. Even when you get back to the bubble.

tl;dr - don't panic, you'll be fine, there's nothing to see here.

Well Said! Reped. Although I'd understand their sentiment of wiping out the savage little bipeds. Bloody annoying creatures...

Loved the background story! Reped. How does flying a Vette for exploration compare? No quick return to the bubble in one of those!
