Wouldn't be surprised if there's some 'interpret their forehead lights' stuff in there.

(And super conjectural, but given the long term aspiration to add complex animal life, they might have passive / friendly variants or behaviours etc.)


Just pray 'communication' is some subtle layering of techniques (find their craft in the right locale, gain access via Encounters of The Third Kind emissions, approach them on foot slowly in full view to avoid startling, ensuring you're downwind of an ammonia outlet )
