Thargoid sight-seeing: Advice required.

I was away from ED when the Thargoid crash sites appeared.
Since I've been back, I've been spending my time "tidying up".

Now I want to go and visit a few of the Thargoid crash sites, before 2.4 lands and things... change.

I've heard about "Unknown Probes" and other malarkey required to gain full access to the crash sites.

Can anybody offer advice about what I need to find and take with me on this excursion, or link to decent Youtube videos explaining it all?

Cheers. [up]

What you're looking for is the Thargoid Surface Site

Here's a vid showing you what the best feature of it is http://https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eDUoC9FZXec

You need a Probe and an Artefact to get in, apparently the Probes aren't spawning properly at the moment but I have one of each items if you wanna go into one and witness what happens
The video shows you what happens, but it's much better to see if with your own eyes

The Cannon Megathread, scroll down a bit and you will find a Spoiler Tag that gives you known decent locations for getting Unknown Probes. You can also find locations for the bases in this thread, and also in the Comments from the Obsidian Ant video that Hunter linked for that particular one. If you want to see everything for yourself, don't watch the vid at all, just get the coordinates from the Comments.

You will need:

Corrosion-Resistant Cargo Rack - Purchased from Palin in Maia. This is not necessary, strictly speaking, but if you don't have access to him, you will want a ship that has some AFMU's, and a high jump range to minimize the damage the Probe does to your ship.
Unknown Artifact - these can be found easily at pretty much any of the old crash sites. You can find those locations in the Cannon Thread as well.
Unknown Probe - I would get this after the Artifact, and not before, but that's just me. It might take a fair amount more time to get the Probe.
Some time - Once you have the Probe, make sure you can go straight there, and do the things. If you are taking damage, and it damages the Cargo Hatch, you can lose the Probe. This will you off, almost certainly.

Enjoy - in my opinion, it's well worth the time spent, even more so if you do it all yourself, rather than watch a how-to for the things inside the base.

Don't take your Cutter. I wouldn't even take an Anaconda. In my opinion, if you have a good DBX or AspX, those are the ships for the job.

There's a guide in the 3rd link in my sig (on the Canonn page) - covers finding UA / UP etc - though UP seem harder to find right now.

Been collecting from this Ripe Barnacle and had two visits from Thargoids. Took about an hour of collecting and then two visits to the barnacle in ten minutes. Mon night 9pm ish

I did it without resistant racking. Just an AFMU and an Asp. It put more pressure on finding the stuff I needed and getting it to the base, getting inside, working out how to activate the thing, etc. Especially once inside with the SRV.
It was one of the best nights I've had in Elite. I don't think it would have been anywhere near as much fun without the jeopardy

I'm going to guess that you didn't land improperly (or without being observant) - if you had, then there would have been even more impetus for you to hurry.
