Thargoids have moods obviously.

Visited several non human signal sources and the outcomes were quite different.

First one the Thargoid came at me, scanned my ship and went about his business collecting stuff and jumped out.
Second one scanned me and turned red, deployed it's thargons and flew off, turned around, waited a bit and jumped out.
Third was like the first.
Fourth however, scanned me and seemed to get back to collecting stuff but when I followed it a bit it turned red, growled, deployed it's thargons and attacked me.
I didn't even deploy my weapons.

I was lucky to get out of there with 45% hull left on my DBX.

They apparently have different moods, the last one was definitely grumpy or just got out a fight with his wife.

Next time I go look for them I want anti Thargoid weapons, grumpy .

I got word to look in Asterope for bugoids, so off I went. It didn't take long to find a USS, so I dropped in and a Thargoid ship tried to scare me off, but I stood my ground. Big mistake, he attacked me and I managed to high wake out with 6% hull. Close call, but I made it to a station and repaired the AspX. Fun!

And they don't think to kindly of you if ye pop them with a research limpet. Nothing like having to dodge weapons fire while it analyzes the target , then you have to do more dodging while the limpet returns to board the ship staying in weapons range the whole time. Dancing with the devil. It's great.

I've yet to see any as I was only on for about an hour earlier and that was mostly finishing up with an engineer and transit. Can't decide what kind of ship I want to take for a first encounter though....

I have my main which is my Clipper "Zarathustra" and then my Cobra "Midnight Dram". I'm not exactly rich, so I'm hesitant to take my Clipper (even though it can haul *** and dance around most things easily)

Or maybe it's time for a new ship? Any suggestions?

I switched ships before heading to bug country. My Python's rebuy is 5.5 Mil, my AspX's rebuy is 1.1 Mil. I'd choose a ship I could afford to loose and not cringe when the rebuy screen pops up. The Cobra is a fast, fun ship and costs little to replace.

That's what I ways thinking and given what people are reporting about massive hull damage I'm definitely investing in some hull reinforcement

I have encountered three thargoids at signal sources. Haven't been attacked yet. I never open fired and approached slowly, got scanned then they went back to it. I scooped up some escape pods and other things but still no hostility. They would finish up then wake out. Not sure what any of this means yet but not getting annihilated is nice. Ill keep at it and see what happens.

OH YA, as they take down your shields they do hull damage at the same time. I fired and collected one research limpet, the dbx got away zero shields and 45% hull.

They went right through my shields, I got away with 45% hull and two rings of shields!!
I didn't deploy my weapons in any of the occasions and made sure not to get to close.

Gotta try those new limpets, sounds like fun, let's probe them for a change :D

I'm using a DBX, low rebuy and fast enough to get away, plus a 50ly jumprange is nice too.

My expensive ships stay in dock untill we get some decent weapons to fight those buggers with, I can only afford a 25 million rebuy so many times.

Chaff seems to be very effective against the Thargoid's main weapon. Strongly recommend running two launchers to keep you covered throughout the encounter. And yes, hull reinforcements are your friend. Go visit Selene Jean if you haven't.

The Thargoids can be kited around pretty effectively as well. Get a wingmate with a tough fast ship to take the heat while you do your science work.

I'll keep the chaff in mind, thanks. Can you buy research limpets in Maia?

You know..there is a book called "Leviathans of Jupiter" where very large "whale like" creatures are discovered living in the depths of Jupiter and they commincate via colors.

Also, in Aurther C Clarke's "Rama" series there are alien life forma that communicate using color.

Just sayin...

1st, kudos for the references! I made one myself, to Larry Niven, who wrote about a Kdatlyno sculptor. The Kdatlyno being blind to the visible light spectrum, and the sculpture was really made to be felt; a Puppeteer suggests to Beowulf Shaeffer "use your tongue. It's much more sensitive."

With all this spectrogram stuff that's been found, I suggested that perhaps the "Thargoid honk" that disables us is not really meant to do that; it might be a hailing frequency. Unfortunately, it shuts our technology down, and when the Thargoid gets no response, it leaves.

Stranger things have been thought of in science fiction.

Well, survived my first encounter....narrowly:cool:

Went out in my Cobra, currently in one if the populated systems near Maia and saw a distress signal, decided to investigate. Drop in and see a decimated Imperial fleet...now on the one hand, as an Imperial citizen and Baron this is somewhat concerning...as a fan of the game...this looks awesome! And eerie! And then I saw it and heard it for the first time (never seen one in person before), I tense up a bit and drift forward cautiously, putting full power to my shields. It mills about and examines it's handiwork with seeming nonchalance, making it even more eerie. The noises it makes are fantastically ominous. I drift even closer and see an escape pods as a pass a lifeless Cutter. "They must be saved!" So, I speed up, drop my cargo hatch and promptly realize that I currently have no cargo space....*sigh*

I come back around to take another look at it and come to the conclusion that it's picking off survivors. "They must be avenged!" I quickly realize that I have no weapons on this ship.....*sigh*

It turns and notices me, the noises change and suddenly things appear scrambled, I panic. "Hell with this, for the Empire!" Full pips to engines and I boost straight into it, connection right towards it's center. I doubt it did anything and I'll never know because as soon as I realized that I was still alive and spinning slowly away I boosted away. My shields were down and it followed, bringing me down to about 45% hull. I put full pips to systems, kept boostng and hoped bi-weave would come through as I waited for my chance at escape, finally my FSD carried me off.

Next time Thargoid....Next time....
(Or not, we'll see lol)

PS loving this so far o7

Great write up, I agree with you, they're eerie and FD did a fantastic job setting the atmosphere at those non human ss sites.
The knowing of not being able to touch them makes it all the more tense.

Strange thing though, at first it was mainly Fed ships shot to pieces, now all I saw was Imps.

But as you said, next time.......

So as of now, the Thargoids are only in USS, and if you want to engage them fine. We can go about our normal business of saving the galaxy without being disturbed. I wonder how long that will last?

You do get hyperdicted so now and then, especially when you get closer to the Pleiades.
Sometimes there are two if them when they hyperdict you.

Ecscuse this commanders ignorance after much time away from the black, but will the Thargoids, act as a singular race, or are there Guilds or clans out there, that are starting to show themselves and attack ships more often?

Just a thought as some appear to, as mentioned, ignore the ship i the vicinty, and others go 'Red'

I do hope this is the case. I'd like to see some variety in these guys.
