Thargoids!:S

That got your attention!

You will not become Elite quickly, why is everyone is such a hurry to get there and miss out the journey?

As a premium beta backer I have played as much as I have been able; I think not enough and my wife thinks too much.

I played the original Elite on the Spectrum and thereafter my Amiga 500 in school and loved it. The grind then was much more time consuming but it was a hugely immersive game especially when you were just about to destroy yet another Thargoid and it spat out half a dozen Thargons. I actually used to leave my Amiga on overnight to play before school the next morning. The only other game I did that for was Sensible World of Soccer! (which had features that money hungry games by producers of the likes of Fifa and Pro Evo still refuse to replicate out of fear of not getting the sale of their next instalment in 8 months’ time)

I have persisted with ED despite initially using the keyboard only until the arrival of my X52 Pro reignited my interest, changed my experience and reminded me of playing Elite with a kempston joystick with 1 fire button, yes just one button!

The game is still in testing and yes there are issues but without this forum and ticketing ED, we will not help to make this game better but worse. There are various “issues” (read complaints) from SC to planning routes, servers to equipment locations, and all the rest in-between. The back of my Elite manual, which I still have, is covered in 2B pencil notes where I worked out how to make credits to save up for bigger cargo and better weapons. now it seems we want everything done for us that we won’t need to actually play the game.

Dara O’Brian had a great games story in one of his stand ups. He discussed playing GTA and driving all across town, over a bridge and through another neighbourhood, all taking time, to complete a mission that he kept failing. He said that it would have been much easier to simply drive to the location once, buy a house and then walk to the mission to save time if he continued to fail.

Given all of the complaints, I have not read one mention of people complaining that loading their 100 ton cargo space in seconds was unrealistic; that fixing their 85% damaged hull happened quicker than you can say “hello” to your MOT mechanic; or that fitting expensive complex scanners/ weapons/ thrusters happens in such a short space of time that you have left the station and used them before you can fill your car tyres with air. There has to be a balance.

If this type of game was that easy to make you would all be playing it already and made by another company. I backed this game because of the original. If we hadn’t backed the game it would either never have been made or some corporation would have directed the content based on a proven formula which would have satisfied some of you even less. Elite’s technical breakthroughs reportedly amazed the BBC Micro's developers, calling it "the game that couldn't have been written". That is the same complex challenge that is faced today.

There is a great deal of hard work going on here; give them a chance and continue to support them with suggestions, ticketing problems and having sensible conversations. Thanks to all in the development team for their hard work and determination to satisfy so many different points of view in a world that is incomprehensibly vast adn pf course to the backers who have made this possible.

I have waited 30 years; I can wait a little longer.

The only real grind ive experianced was reading this -.-
