This would make it much easier to build shelters, as at the moment it is very difficult to build wall on top of the fence, to make the shelter taller and also for appearance. I wish it would just snap up there, but it doesn't.
That building peices could automatically attach to habitat fences, or at least take a grid pattern from them

While I agree that this could be helpful you might wanna try to build the shelter first and then use the null fence to build a barrier inside the wall. It works pretty well that way (when building simple square shelters it's best if you start at the very edge of the first wall piece, set the length to 4m and work with the 90°snap) and you also can change the fence type later on.
I wouldn't mind some improvements to the building grid system, such as being able to place barriers using the grid from the buildings, or adding options in so that things like columns could snap at the end of wall pieces the right direction, instead of sticking straight out.
