The 10 year plan

FD have hinted at there being a 10 year plan for the game, so they must know some things in advance. Of course plans may change, but I am interested in one particular detail about the future, if this detail is already considered in the plan.

2.1 and the engineers brought us something that caught many here by surprise, and that is a steep step in vertical progression towards much more powerful equipment. I won't debate that per se here, but I would like to know whether this is the end and an A-rated ship completely upgraded with grade 5 modifications is the end of the line.

Or will there be modification grades above 5?

Will there be entirely new, more powerful modification types?

What about Thargoids, are these going to be coupled with higher equipment or upgrade tiers?

No plan so far in that regard? Undecided?

These questions should be interesting for everyone, those who like engineer upgrades just the way they are as well as those who would prefer to not have further vertical progression. There is merit in both points of view and that is why there are indeed video games of both types, some facilitate it as a central feature, others don't have it at all. So the question this all boils down to:

Is ED intended to be about ever-continuing vertical progression?

Thargoids will be fitted with even more advanced gear and will be your toughest opponents....for like a few days, and then Frontier will cave to the Explorers who will be furious that they can't explore the uncharted Universe in peace.

Can't say I'm not excited by the prospect of alien technology becoming available in some way, shape or form.. maybe a Thargoid engineer even eventually.. after we conquer their invasion ofc :)

I haven't seen many explorers complain about 2.1, mostly traders and pew-pew'ers

Not sure what the problem is with more progression upwards, gotta keep players busy who play year after year. Its nice to get something better, as long as folks who don't care about it can ignore it I see no issue.

I think I read that there would be SOME more module enhancement as time goes on but none as big as engineers simply because that is the engineers raison d'etre so 2.1 was centred around loot

This thread is not to discuss whether it is good or bad. As I said there are merits to both opinions. This thread is to talk about (and maybe get someone from FD to chime in :)) what the plans are in this regard.

No idea about FDs plans (and they surely don't want to reveal them), but what i would love to see in regards to the Thargoids is that when they finally appear, they will totally wipe us away. Reducing our known habited bubble to a minimum. Then, after some time and lots of hopeless fights, we begin to understand their technology, develop experimental weapons and slowly start to fight back.

Another interesting story could be an attack of another alien race, which is even superior to the Thargoids, and we team up with the Thargoids, sharing technology and get better equipment from this cooperation.

So, yeah, i think we will get better ships & weapons in the future. But i hope this will be story related.

Where is the obligatory poll?

Might as well give the devs an impression of what the players expect to see in the future of the game.

As someone who plays table top rpgs, and dabbles in designing them. Power creep is a necessary part of incremental game design. There needs to be a reason to buy "the new thing" that can be engaging content, or increasingly powerful options, or pretty, pretty pictures, but a real pro will tell you that ideally is should really be all three, and the trick is to not ramp up the power too quickly so that the game remains manageable. We know they want player controlled capitol ships at some point in the future, but that's probably a while off, as that will, probably, be about as powerful as they can go for a mainstay update, after that it will likely be adding more capitol ships.

My hope is that we will see more and more evidence of alien life (not just Thargoids) as this year & next year proceed. We already have alien relics as rare goods......well why not have the ruins of settlements belonging to long dead alien races-even on the surface of airless or near airless worlds (they don't all have to have *always* airless)? Explorers could discover them & get nice boosts to their ranks as a result, & maybe collect some relics/artifacts to sell.
