The 3 mysterious companions of Sol? Has anyone noticed this before?

Sol has 3 companions in the skybox. I have no idea what they are supposed to be. Seems like a relic bug, but who knows?

They are far far closer to Sol than Alpha Centauri. They can be seen from every direction (so that rules out them just being far off stars that randomly align).

For now, I will share these screenies, but I will make my case with more screenies probably later on tonight. I will also show that I think I can even see them in the skybox at Sol itself. So come and check this OP again tomorrow.

Here it is from LHS 1228 ~ 72ly away:

Here it is from UV Ceti ~ 9ly away:

As I said, I'll back this up with shots from different angles, and try to get the screenie of one of the companions I found at Sol itself in the skybox.

Either way, what on earth is all this?

Three new systems close to SOL created by the Ancients ;)

Bit of a tangent but -

Has anyone in Beta visited Persephone (planet 9) yet? It would be great if E D plotted this in the right place before it is actually observed.

Ah the old eyeball playing tricks on me stuff.

I get the same effect when I'm trying to figure out the orbit of the space station so I know whether to head straight for it or roll to the side to avoid being hit in the gravity well.

Chances are your eyes are playing tricks in that without fore/background, it makes things look 2D and gives the illusion that something is closer then is actually is.

As I said, and as I will prove soon, this is not the case here. These guys are next to Sol and can be seen from every angle.

Well, the logical question to ask would be, where are those three stars in the skybox of Sol itself? Since they're visible from 75 LY away, they'd clearly all be visible from Earth. Look for three very bright stars in places where there shouldn't be any.

Two options I can think of:
- They are "overlay" stars, placed there near Sol specifically to make a star that ED calculates as being too dim to see from Earth, bright enough to be seen instead. In which case, you won't be able to see them from Earth, since they will line up perfectly with a remote real star. We don't know anything about which stars they might be covering for, except that one of them is red and two are blue or white. To check this, you'd need to go to Alpha Centauri or somewhere nearby, and look for bright stars visible from Earth that have suddenly vanished, or appear to have moved much further than such a remote star should have moved.

- They are "test" systems, like the "single light test" system mentioned by Garzini, or other hidden systems; perhaps two of them are "Arrival" and "Departure" from the tutorials. In which case, there should be three extremely bright stars in the sky of Earth that "shouldn't be there". Unless, of course, they've all been carefully hidden by three tiny, well-placed dark nebulae.

I'm sure I said in the OP that I've found at least one of them in the Earth skybox...

Going to update the op with this soon guys

I'm confused. What is this 'skybox' you speak of?
I have a skybox but it's connected to my TV via an HDMI cable.
Just in case this is a serious question, I'll answer... :)

The "skybox" is the name for the "sky" you see in each system. Unlike most games it isn't static, or randomly generated, in Elite: Dangerous every star, and every nebula you see in the sky (skybox) exists (or should exist, hence this discussion), and you can navigate towards it and fly to each and every one of those stars.

I have seen interesting artifacts in the skybox before, and flown to them - a strange bright blue star turned out to be a tiny blue nebula over a thousand Ly away, other significant stars are often orange giant stars, or if you're lucky a red supergiant. A couple of weeks ago I flew around 500+ Ly chasing a star in the skybox that turned out to be a red supergiant.

Edit: Well you can't fly to everything - some of the things you can see are dwarf galaxies and other galaxies outside our own. They're too far away to get to, but they exist in the appropriate place, and are relative to the part of the galaxy that you're in.

Made a bug report about it. Really strange that has persisted for 2 years...

FYI I've compiled a list of all the external galaxies, with star charts and my best guesses at which ones they are:

Oh cool! You're missing at least one nebula that's visible from the bubble though - and it's the one I referred to above that I went chasing. It really is tiny from the bubble, and just looks like a blue star - the nebula is pretty small too, but very very very blue.

I'll try and find it again next time I'm in the game and report back - I documented all my deliberate exploration trips - but I didn't realise that trip was going to even be an exploration trip until I was way too far into it to bother. :)

Edit: Just checked my Flickr - I'm pretty sure this is a picture of it, taken from "CD-26 1339" if that helps?

Just to give another view ...

From beta 2.2 ...

This is Persephone (Planet 9) in the system Sol, with Sol in the distance:

Here is a view of Persephone's other hemishphere (i.e. illuminated):

On the way out there I visited MakeMake, it's newly discovered moon is not modelled (neither are many of Sol's other small moons), here is Makekmake anyway:

I don't know why the spoiler tabs seem not to be working, sorry.
