The 4 Animal Only Habitat Wishlist

Random Goat has done some amazing work on the Meta Wishlist, on a scale that is kinda mindblowing for keeping on top of, but I kinda liked the idea of running a companion poll to that? The thing with having the option to pick 25 animals is its great for seeing where general interest lies, but doesn't necessarily capture the species people are most passionate about. We could for instance discover that Tasmanian Devil is everyones 25th favourite choice. So, simple thing, in this thread, you get 4 picks only. Think of it as if one final pack was being made by Frontier and they picked it as a gift to your tastes specifically.

Quick Rules
  • No aviary only species.
  • No fully aquatic species like fish or cetaceans
  • No subspecies unless the species in game is already divided on a subspecies level ie. wolf, brown bear, tiger, lion, leopard etc
  • I'll probably clump the tally into single species and closely related species clusters depending on what it is, for instance:

EXAMPLE

"Sloth"
- too broad - be more specific.
"Three-toed sloth sp." - sensible level fo detail.
"Pale-throated Three-toed Sloth" - probably too granular given the fairly subtle differences.

So that Said:
My own four:

1. Sloth Bear
2. Golden Lion Tamarin
3. Giant Salamander sp.
4. Giant Armadillo

I look forward to seeing yours!

EDIT: Update 5 as of 18th December 2022!

Lots of species from the upper reaches of the list got in this time round, so a ton of bumps up the list!

I will note that I've left Armadillo in for now, purely because none of the species specific votes were for nine-banded, however if you choose to replace that I'm happy to deduct it from the overall totals.

Very easy. My list is pretty much already in order as is, as I'm a bit OCD and lists are one of my obsessions.

1. Wombat but if I had to pick a species I'd say Common Wombat - but you want to lump all wombats together that's fine, I'm fine with either of the Hairy Nosed species too.
2. Wolverine
3. Red River Hog
4. African Crested Porcupine - like the wombat, if you end up lumping old world porcupines together that is fine as well. Perfectly happy with the Cape Porcupine (it's the local zoo one anyways,) and while not my go to i would be okay with the Indian Porcupine

I'll give two separate answers.

The "My specific personal favorites" pack (use this one for tallying purposes):
  • Raccoon dog
  • Matschie's tree kangaroo
  • Red fox
  • Golden lion tamarin
But there's also the "These animals really, really ought to be here and would actually make the game feel complete" pack:
  • Emu
  • Dromedary
  • Hamadryas baboon
  • Patagonian mara
Both of them are super important and meaningful to me for different reasons. Red river hog probably just barely misses the cutoff for both lists.

Hmm hard one, but with no flying animals allowed that narrows it down a lot for me, if we are talking animals i want 100%:

1. Maned wolf
2. Howler monkey
3. Secretary bird
4. Ocelot

Still really hard: caracal, grey crowned crane, mandarin duck, emu, greater rhea, red river hog, scarlet ibis, golden pheasant, blackbuck, sloth bear and greater kudu almost made the cut.

Cool idear! Mine are:

1. Racoon (my most wanted for a time now, small, aboreal, versatile, if they are in the game northern north america would feel pretty much complete to me)
2. Emperor Tamarin (Tamarins would be lovely and these are my favorite Tamarins)
3. Domestic Yak (I want to build a cool himalaya area one day amd these guys are pretty much essential. The domestic version also grants flexibility as a much needed petting zoo animal)
4. White Faced Whistling Duck (we need water fowl and this is a very widesüread pretty duck. Nuff said)

I was about to do the same.
I agree with your top 2 of your second list. The emu and the dromedary HAVE to be added at some point for the game to feel complete in regards of NON AVIAN animals
As much as i would love to get Patagonian maras in the game i don't think they are essential though. I feel like at least one anatidae bird (duck or swan basically) is totally missing to fill the ponds and lakes, they are in every zoo i know. The only real big names still missing that i can think of are the nile croc and the black rhino. A baboon would be great and the hamadryas baboon is the obvious choice but i think we are really lacking in monkeys in general both new and old world... and i think the howler, the tamarins and the mantled guereza are also pretty iconic and essential at this point.

In any case though, no zoo game will ever feel complete without birds like macaws and parrots in my mind though.

I can easily make an animal pack of my most wanted animals, so it's really just a matter of shrinking that down.
  1. Secretary Bird (although it's a flying bird, it's mostly terrestrial, like the Red-Crowned Crane)
  2. Tasmanian Devil
  3. Elk (not picky on the subspecies)
  4. Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo

My top picks would be species from animal groups that current have no representation/rig in PZ. They’d also be really useful for mods (hundreds of species could be made from them.) Though I made my list species-specific, I’d be happy with any species in their broader families.

1. Coconut Crab
2. Alligator Snapping Turtle
3. West Indian Manatee (if not allowed, then Secretary Bird)
4. Mandarin Duck

If this were to be the last pick I would choose the following habitat animals. These might seem like off choices, but these animals would provide foundations for the longevity of the game after content updates cease.

1. Crested porcupine
2. Two toed sloth
3. Arctic hare
4. Asian softshell turtle

1. Great White Pelican or Pelican sp.
2. Linnaeus' Two-Toed Sloth (in the 'big' list I went with the three-toed but this one is apparently more common) or two-toed sloth sp.
3. Hamadryas Baboon
4. Lesser Chevrotain (in the 'big' list I went with the greater but that was a mistake)

Shout-out to the Asian giant softshell turtle, as I'm on the fence whether it should be a habitat or exhibit species.

Wow,… super tough but, if we’ve only got 4 then I have to restrict to species I think we (I) really need rather than the ones Tassie devil) I want most.
For me, that means filling the most glaring gaps: Oceania, monkeys and birds…. Apart from the monkey all are going to be Oceanian because the region needs way more to even approach the representation of other regions.

Red-necked / Bennett’s wallaby. We need a cold climate macropod!)

North island brown Kiwi. It was between this and the emu. In the end I decided I’d like NZ to get some representation in-game so, although emu is badly needed and is much, much more common in zoos, I chose the kiwi.

Black swan. I think we badly need some birds, and this one is common in zoos as well as being Oceanian.

Literally any Amazonian monkey. Whilst SA is better represented than Australia/Oceania, I just can’t make an Amazon area in my zoo without at least one monkey! If you need me to be more specific then a Spider monkey but TBH I just want a monkey.

First update done - so far only 6 species/taxons have secured multiple votes. I've tried to collapse votes down in such a way that feels representative of how distinctive they are from each other / likely to exist as multiple separate entities in game, but feel free to debate the point if you don't think I've been fair!

- 3 votes for Golden Lion Tamarin

- 2 votes for Wolverine, Old World Pocupines (specifically African Crested so far), Tree Kangaroos (one for Goodfellows, one for Matschie's), Secretary bird and a Spider-monkey species. Full table atm in the opening post.

Oh this is challenging.
1. North Island brown kiwi, of course.
2. Mexican spider monkey (or Geoffroy's spider monkey, to put it at the species level).
3. Emu.
4. Sumatran tiger.

The fourth slot was really a battle between the tiger and the Tasmanian devil, but ultimately I think the tiger would be more broadly useful to me, as much as I desperately want the devil as well.
